Pauline's voice crackled with such fury that Emily subconsciously flinched. She instinctively drew the receiver a few inches away from her ear to spare her eardrum before hesitantly holding it close again.
"What do you mean by such a prank?"
"Do you want to get us killed?"
"We've treated you well over the years, yet you couldn't do this little favor?"
"Aren't you being heartless?" Pauline fired on. Emily could feel the coldness emanating from every word she spoke.
A soft sigh escaped her lips, her fingers softly rubbed her throbbing temples, she could already feel a headache forming.
Ever since the realization that she had married someone else other than the agreed suitor, Emily had anticipated this moment when the loan sharks would come knocking.
And waking up to Pauline's call early in the morning only confirmed her fears. This was precisely why she had hurriedly left Melissa's home, hoping not to be found if anyone came searching.
