Those were the words echoing in Zalyric's mind even a full day after interrogating the servant. They clung to him like a stain he couldn't scrub off, whispering every time he closed his eyes. His jaw tightened at the memory, but when he finally faced Rowan again, none of that turmoil showed on his face.
"What, aren't you going to let me see her? What happened to her? Did you… did you perhaps kill her?" Rowan asked. And even though he had already heard from Zalyric that it was indeed Cora who had been poisoning him, Rowan never showed anger toward her. For the first time, despite knowing that the friendship they shared had been fake—Rowan had genuinely treated her as a friend.
The same went for Ruth, who was still recovering.
