"Are you expecting a visitor? At this hour, no less?"
After asking that, Rowan simply shook his head and glanced toward the door. When he started walking to open it, Zalyric frowned with his instincts stirring uneasily. As an alpha with sharpened senses, he would have noticed if a servant had been approaching but there had been no footsteps, no hint of movement until the knock itself.
Something wasn't right.
And why, of all places, would someone come to Rowan's room? The thought struck Zalyric like lightning. With the realization, his eyes widened as he quickly moved toward Rowan but it was already too late.
Rowan had opened the door.
"H-Hey, wait!" Zalyric shouted just as a man dressed in a servant's uniform waited by the door with the small food cart. Without warning, the man pulled out a knife and lunged straight at Rowan's stomach.
