Coulson explained, "He wasn't running tests. In fact, he wasn't even in the room. It triggered automatically!"
"It just…triggered itself?" Agent Hill asked, somewhat shocked.
"What's the energy level now?"
"What's going on, Doctor?" Nick Fury asked, seeing Dr. Selvig from a distance. "Tell me exactly what's happening now?"
"The Tesseract is acting up!" Dr. Selvig said on the screen, approaching the Tesseract with an iron bar, only to be repelled. That's exactly what he wanted Nick Fury to see.
"Is this a joke?" Nick Fury frowned.
"Not a joke!"
Dr. Selvig explained, "The Tesseract is not only very active, but also acts on its own!"
"Then unplug the power cord and see!" Nick Fury suggested.
"But it's a power source itself!" Dr. Selvig said. "We shut down the power, and it turns itself back on. If we let it reach its peak..."
"Isn't that our goal?" Nick Fury asked, a bit puzzled. "To draw energy from the universe!"
"We're not ready!"
Dr. Selvig shrugged and said,
He was completely at a loss when it came to the Tesseract. "My calculations still need some time. It's constantly emitting and interfering with radiation. It's not harmful, though, just very low-level gamma rays."
"It's still harmful!" Nick Fury frowned, thought for a moment, and then spoke. "Where's Agent Barton?"
He immediately asked about Hawkeye Barton, who should have been stationed there.
"Hawkeye is hiding out in the bird's nest!"
Dr. Selvig pointed upwards.
Hawkeye Barton was quietly observing the situation, but he was quickly called down by Nick Fury.
"Did you notice who activated it?" Nick Fury asked as he walked.
Hawkeye Barton immediately shook his head and said, "No one went in or out. Dr. Selvig is innocent. There was no contact, no information. If there's a problem, it's not on our side!"
"Our side?" Nick Fury seemed to understand something.
He trusted Hawkeye Barton, of course. He was one of his top agents, especially with his eyes. If he said no one was there, then it was probably true.
"Yeah, the Tesseract is a door to the other side of the universe, right? That door should be able to open from both sides!" Hawkeye Barton explained.
"Wait a minute, this thing... it looks so familiar..." Captain Rogers said, looking at the Tesseract.
"Of course it's familiar. The space teleporter used this as its core energy source, remember? I used the Mind Stone to break the barrier and cut off the space rift," Black Widow Natasha said.
Everyone nodded, they all remembered it well. This thing was the key to the Chitauri invasion.
"It's not that. It's this Tesseract. I took it from Red Skull of HYDRA," Captain Rogers said.
He looked at Nick Fury with a touch of suspicion, wondering what dangerous things Fury was secretly researching again.
"So Fury, what exactly are you researching?" Tony Stark asked directly. "What is this thing, why are you studying it, and did you bring Loki here?"
