"We won!"
Captain Rogers looked at the surroundings, a city in ruins, and it seemed that only now could he finally accept that they had won, defeating the army of this terrifying alien civilization.
"Great job, guys, great job. I think we shouldn't go to work tomorrow, take a day off. Have you ever eaten Turkish Kebab? There's a place about two blocks away, I don't know how it tastes, but I want to try it!" Tony Stark said.
"We're not done yet!" Thor said.
Tony Stark replied, "Then we'll eat kebab later!"
The next moment, the scene shifted, and the members of the Avengers were in a kebab restaurant, eating Turkish Kebab with expressions of utter despair.
Their faces were etched with 'happy' and 'I like it.'
The video ended there.
Tony Stark sighed, a wry smile on his face. He could practically feel the little Easter egg at the end of the video, it was filled with Lin Feng's sense of humor. He was definitely doing it on purpose.
Purposefully making them realize just how awful that Turkish Kebab tasted.
"Em... Tony, your taste is really... not great," Hawkeye Barton said.
Everyone nodded, silently removing Turkish Kebab from their meal list.
That look of utter despair was simply too impactful for them.
"I haven't eaten it either, and aren't they saying, you can't have a meal without stepping on a landmine!" Tony Stark retorted, unconvinced.
"Tony, we're really impressed with you now. We didn't expect you to make such a righteous decision in the end. No wonder Lin Feng said you were a mortal body, comparable to a god."
Black Widow Natasha spoke.
"That's, the shining point of my personality," Tony Stark said, a rather smug expression on his face.
Although the self in another timeline was a bit reckless, he really had no choice at that point.
Even though it was a bit unfair to Pepper Potts, the problem was that if the alien army spread, everything he wanted to protect would be lost.
"But those politicians are crazy, actually launching a Nuclear Missile at New York!" Hill exclaimed.
Although New York ultimately survived, just the possibility of it was enough to make people gasp.
"If it's truly a matter of life and death, what does even ten New Yorks matter?" Captain Rogers said.
As a soldier, and a veteran who had personally experienced World War II, he still had a typical wartime mindset. The biggest difference between a wartime mindset and a peacetime mindset is that the peacetime mindset always considers how many people will be sacrificed.
And a war mentality prioritizes ensuring ultimate victory, with the sacrifice of a few to protect the majority, which is normal.
He just couldn't quite reconcile the Tony Stark standing before him with the selfless, even self-sacrificing Tony Stark from the video. Was this the same person?
Could this possibly be the same person?
You're telling me this is Tony Stark?
This... this is the playboy?
Everyone considered it, and Captain Rogers's logic held up. If they weren't considering their entire lives, if their relatives and friends weren't also in New York, then what he said made perfect sense.
If the Chitauri army spread out, whether they died under a nuclear missile or were slaughtered by the aliens, it seemed there wouldn't be much difference.
"But isn't the Chitauri's technological development a bit... unbalanced?" Tony Stark spoke up. "Firstly, they don't seem to have wormhole jump capabilities, nor do they have the ability for superluminal flight. They even needed our Earthly collaborators to prepare this device for them."
"Secondly, that huge Chitauri mothership… how could it possibly lack an air defense system? A single nuclear missile wiped them all out?"
Tony Stark still found it unbelievable. As a species capable of interstellar travel, you'd expect them to have at least a basic air defense system, if not an energy shield. They shouldn't be so easily taken down by a single nuclear missile.
It was too lopsided.
Even on Earth, the navies of various major countries wouldn't be completely devoid of air defense capabilities, yet they were wiped out so easily.
"And they feel like those insectoids from science fiction novels, all depending on a single mothership. Their entire consciousness is concentrated there. Once it's destroyed, they lose all connection. So, are these Chitauri soldiers actually unmanned robots?" Tony Stark said incredulously.
Unmanned robots and drones were very popular concepts on Earth, especially to reduce soldier casualties, and development was already underway. However, even so, no country could develop a product that would completely lose its combat effectiveness if it couldn't connect to the network.
Were all the soldiers cloud-connected? Did their bodies lack processors? Didn't they store tasks? Didn't they consider the possibility of losing connection?
"So, I think I've figured out how to deal with these aliens. We don't even need a nuclear missile to destroy their mothership. We just need to develop a signal-blocking processor. Cut off their signal, and every one that comes will be neutralized..." Tony Stark continued to complain.
These two methods were different in appearance, but they achieved the same effect.
He originally thought the Chitauri's mothership would be very difficult to deal with, but what happened?
It completely disappointed him. How could it have no basic defensive capabilities? It couldn't even intercept a nuclear missile developed by a level 0.7 Earthling.
This whole thing felt absurd.
It wasn't even as good as the Patriot series, which was everywhere. At least a few hundred Patriot missiles could intercept this nuclear missile.
If you said they weren't prepared, then Tony Stark would laugh even harder. You're an interstellar civilization that has conquered countless civilizations, and your combat experience should be very extensive. How come you've never encountered a nuclear missile or a long-range missile before?
He simply couldn't understand it.
So, he could only understand that the Chitauri's development was completely skewed and they had taken the wrong path.
Otherwise, it would be difficult to explain the fluctuating combat strength of these Chitauri.
If you say they aren't strong, they can easily crush the American military, and even the superheroes are very embarrassed. After just an hour, they were already showing signs of fatigue. Give them a little more time, and wiping out the Avengers would be no problem at all.
To the point where the American government had to cruelly blow up their own New York.
But if you want to say how powerful they are, their mothership, the kind that can roam the universe, didn't even have a warning system, not even an air defense system, and was just directly blown up.
Their soldiers, their spaceships, were like NPCs controlled by a network; if the network was cut, they were finished, not even a program for independent combat.
If they had such things, even if the spatial rift was cut off, preventing them from sending reinforcements from their home world, it would still be very difficult to clear the already arrived Chitauri soldiers and spaceships.
So, if you say they're not good, then with those few tricks, Earth's humans really can't handle them. But if you say they're good, it feels so frustrating, you're not convinced, and it's so annoying.
It's really impossible to advance, and impossible to retreat; it's really infuriating.
One can only say that the Chitauri's technology tree was completely skewed. For example, these Chitauri soldiers didn't even have reliable armor, and they made their war weapons look like a big fish. They looked flashy, but besides proving their high level in anti-gravity technology, they were useless.
And the Chitauri clearly have a high level of science, but in terms of war applications, they're only about on par with the current level of Earth's humans.
It's just that their more advanced technology makes Earth's military resistance so completely outmatched.
He was confident that if Earth's technology could one day develop to a level comparable to the Chitauri, it would be more than enough to crush them and teach them a thing or two about the art of war.
It really felt like a waste of resources. Such a high level of scientific advancement, and the final product was...this.
It was like fighting a World War I or World War II battle with modern weaponry.
In Tony Stark's imagination, a civilization capable of interstellar travel would have equipment like his current armor as a common thing, a standard level. Looking at those Chitauri soldiers, he doubted what level of civilization they actually were.
If Earth's civilization could just reach level one, it wouldn't be worse than them, right? It was infuriating, funny, and helpless all at once.
The funny part was, the opponent was so ridiculous and useless.
The infuriating part was, we couldn't beat such a useless opponent. Wouldn't that be worse than being an idiot?
So, his current feeling was: good news, the Chitauri had messed up their technology tree, performing like idiots.
Bad news: these moronic aliens beat the American military and nearly conquered Earth.
"If I had my way, at that stage of development, they'd at least have an Energy Shield. But they don't seem to have thought of that," Tony Stark said.
"But we should be glad they don't have that ability. Their tech tree is messed up, or else how would we win? We'd have no chance," Black Widow Natasha said.
"That's right!"
Tony Stark nodded, but his expression didn't soften much. He was never one to pin his hopes on his opponents' mistakes.
Because that was a bit too humiliating for him.
And besides, these were just the Chitauri. What about other cosmic civilizations?
Did they have to hope that every one of them would have a messed-up tech tree?
In the final analysis, strengthening themselves was the most crucial thing.
