"Boss, it's definitely the Captain. Although we can't see his face clearly yet, the uniform matches the one on the cards I played with as a kid. If there isn't a second Captain America in this world, it should be him!" Coulson opened his satellite phone and informed Nick Fury.
"Finally found him," Nick Fury's voice came from the other end of the line.
At this moment, Nick Fury was in the warm and cozy office at S.H.I.E.L.D.'s headquarters in New York, looking out the window at the S.H.I.E.L.D. base.
Although Lin Feng's diary served as a guide, it still took several months to complete the final search. This was because the matter couldn't be made public and required the discreet mobilization of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s resources.
Even though S.H.I.E.L.D. nominally had the backing of the five permanent members of the Security Council, theoretically possessing rights superior to any other organization, the reality was different. The United States had been too dominant for years, especially in the past thirty years, when its national power had become unparalleled. To put it bluntly, the other nations combined didn't have as much money as the U.S.
As the saying goes, "He who pays the piper calls the tune." Gradually, S.H.I.E.L.D. had devolved from an international organization maintaining world security into a private organization of the United States.
The US government was naturally pleased. However, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s activities within the domestic borders and spheres of influence of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council were restricted, as they weren't their own people.
The other countries weren't fools either. Their branches within the five major powers had almost all been infiltrated by those respective countries. This meant that although the New York headquarters was still the superior body of these branches on the surface, actually controlling them wasn't as easy as it used to be.
In fact, various countries had even established their own units to deal with supernatural forces. The most famous of these was probably China's Spear Bureau. One S.H.I.E.L.D., one Spear, the implication of their rivalry was very clear.
If this hadn't been the case, they could have simply mobilized the agents from the Russian branch to do the job, without having to resort to such covert operations.
But this time, they were looking for Captain America, a symbol of American freedom. It was hard to guarantee that the Russian authorities wouldn't secretly interfere.
Due to all these reasons, the matter had been delayed until today.
Captain America's return would bring enormous benefits. Aside from his value as a morale booster, Captain America's combat strength was also something S.H.I.E.L.D. desperately needed right now.
Perhaps Lin Feng had been right. After Tony Stark announced, "I am Iron Man," he could clearly feel an increase in the activity of various underground organizations. Powerful criminals were emerging constantly, making it a headache for S.H.I.E.L.D. to deal with them.
Having another top-tier combatant was extremely important.
"Cut the whole block of ice and bring it back. Be careful, don't alert anyone!" Nick Fury ordered.
Scared by what Lin Feng had said about Hydra, Nick Fury even began to become paranoid, wondering if there were spies and moles within S.H.I.E.L.D.
"Understood," Coulson replied, and then directed people to cut the entire ice block and take it to the icebreaker docked in the distance, preparing to return to America.
Several days later, in a hospital room, Captain America, Steve Rogers, who had been asleep for an unknown amount of time, woke up.
The commentary of a baseball game came from his ears, and he immediately realized something was wrong.
He looked around, and it seemed to be a familiar environment, but everything also seemed a little different.
Especially the baseball game broadcast on the radio, which constantly reminded him of the strangeness of this room.
Then a woman wearing a U.S. military uniform walked in, a sweet smile on her face. Seeing Captain America, she smiled slightly and said, "Good morning? Or good afternoon."
"Where am I?" Captain America, Steve Rogers, asked.
"In a hospital room in New York!" the woman replied.
After hearing this, Captain Rogers was silent for a moment before asking again, "Where exactly am I?"
The red-haired woman was a little flustered and immediately said, "I don't know what you're talking about?"
"The baseball game, I know it was in May of 1941 because I was there!"
Captain America stated very firmly.
Hearing this, the red-haired woman's expression immediately changed.
"I'll ask you again, where am I?" Captain America pressed forward step by step, and the red-haired woman panicked completely and immediately pressed the alarm.
At this moment, the agents who had been waiting outside burst in.
But after a moment, Captain America, Steve Rogers, knocked them all down, they were no match for him.
Captain America, Steve Rogers, then rushed out, ignoring the red-haired woman's words, and sprinted through the S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters.
When he got outside, he saw a world he couldn't understand, filled with neon lights and LED displays, a world he didn't comprehend.
The New York he remembered was already a first-rate, bustling metropolis, but compared to what he was seeing now, it was vastly different. It was as if he had entered a future world.
However, after a moment, he was surrounded by a group of agents, led by a black one-eyed man who told Captain America, Steve Rogers, to halt.
"At ease, soldier. Welcome to the 21st century!" Nick Fury said. "I'm sorry about putting on that show, but we haven't figured out how to explain this to you yet."
"What fact?" Captain America, Steve Rogers, asked.
"So, you've been asleep, asleep for seventy years," Nick Fury asked, hands in his pockets.
Hearing this, Captain America, Steve Rogers, looked around, his expression dazed and his eyes filled with confusion.
"Captain? Are you alright?" Nick Fury asked, a little worried. He hoped Rogers hadn't become addle-brained after just thawing out.
Steve Rogers took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down. Then he said, "I'm fine. I just… I had a date… and there's no chance anymore…"
He had suddenly arrived seventy years in the future. Even if Peggy was still alive, she would likely be a white-haired old woman. He was incredibly disheartened.
"If it's convenient, why don't you come with us now and we can talk? What do you say?" Nick Fury suggested. "I think if we keep blocking traffic here, the police will be on our backs soon."
"Alright, no problem."
Steve Rogers said. He also noticed more and more people gathering around. The habit of people wanting to watch the excitement was the same everywhere. He didn't want to be gawked at like a monkey.
Captain Rogers quickly followed Nick Fury back to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s headquarters, entering Fury's office.
"Coffee? Or something else?" Nick Fury asked.
"Coffee, please," Captain Rogers replied. He wasn't in the mood for anything else at the moment.
After Nick Fury poured him a cup of coffee, he began, "Captain, it's been over seventy years since the war you fought in, World War II."
"World War II… Over seventy years… Has it been that long?" Captain Rogers said, a bit lost in thought.
It wasn't just a missed date. More importantly, this was clearly a time of peace. What use was a soldier like him, skilled only in killing? What could he even do now?
This was a common problem for many veterans after they retired. Their time in the military might have been short, but it could affect them for the rest of their lives.
"So, why did you go to all the trouble of finding me? Is there anything I can still do?" Captain Rogers asked directly.
"Of course, that's the first thing to do. You are a hero of this country, no, you are a hero of this world. You saved the world from Hydra, from the Nazis." Nick Fury gushed, laying on the flattery. "If we didn't know, then so be it, but now that we know, we can't just stand by and do nothing. We will save you at any cost!"
Captain America, Steve Rogers, was indifferent to this. That kind of talk might fool others, but he was a true blue, old-school American. He knew what the US government was really like.
Not long before in his memory, there was an incident where veterans of World War I were suppressed while seeking their pensions.
He loved his country, that was true, but loving the country and loving the American government were two different things.
Moreover, after he joined the army, he had seen too many dark things to be surprised. He truly had great love, was selfless, and was willing to sacrifice himself for the country; but to say he was naive and didn't know the true face of politicians and the upper echelons, that would be underestimating him.
It was precisely because he knew the face of the government that he was unwilling to sign the Superhuman Registration Act later, which eventually led to the Avengers splitting up, and himself forming the West Coast Avengers.
After all, the founding spirit of America was freedom, and that so-called freedom was built on the premise that the US government was a bunch of bastards who would never do good deeds.
You had to admit, it was the Americans themselves who understood the American government best.
"And you're not useless either, look at this…" Nick Fury saw that Captain America Rogers wasn't moved, so he didn't beat around the bush any longer. He took out the notebook and handed it to Captain America Rogers.
This was something he had discussed with Black Widow and Hawkeye. Since they planned to build the Avengers with Captain America as the core, this secret couldn't be kept from him.
"This world still has a lot of instability. Believe me, you definitely won't be without things to do in the future. On the contrary, you'll have a huge workload." Nick Fury also poured himself a cup of coffee and took a sip.
Captain America Rogers began to flip through the diary. At first, his brows were furrowed because he couldn't understand it. What was this about waiting for Tony Stark to be kidnapped? He didn't understand any of it.
Especially things like the multiverse, timelines, and parallel universes. For an old-timer like him, it was simply a headache.
