Cherreads

Chapter 3 - A crack in the armour.

Tristan's POV

My heart sank, seeing her face all messed up with tears. Her eyes were puffy and red.

I felt a sense of guilt wash over me as I watched tears trail down her cheek and drop on her pink lips.

Was I too hard on her?

My mind drifted off but was quickly restored with a noise.

She jerked out of the chair and turned away. I turned my face away as well, unsure how to react.

Do I console her?

What am I supposed to say?

My mind screamed at me, and I stepped into her office. Surprisingly, I have never entered this place before, even though I have been the CEO for over a year and have hired about eleven office assistants.

I cleared my throat and tugged at my tie nervously. I have never done this before, so I have no idea where to start.

"Uhmm… Miss Lakewood…" I cleared my throat but couldn't say much. She wiped her tears and turned around. My gaze fell on her exposed cleavage, and my heart thudded. I immediately looked and froze on the spot.

What was that?

I shook my head and tried again, and this time, our eyes locked.

Her brown eyes softened, and I felt a wave of unknown emotion hit me. I gulped down some saliva and brought my head down.

"I have a meeting in thirty minutes. Prepare the Pacific files, cause I will be needing it. You will be coming with me." The words rolled out of my mouth swiftly, and I quickly headed out.

"Oh! One more thing, take your time and…"

"Never mind.." I walked away with sweats dripping down my arms.

A while after, I heard a knock on my door and almost flinched out of my chair. Ever since I returned to my office, I can't seem to get the image of her crying face out of my mind.

Even though I tried to distract myself with work, my mind kept drifting away. And since I was having a meeting soon, I ditched the documents and sat back on my chair, waiting for her to be ready.

"Come in…" I looked away when she walked in, pretending not to care.

"I have the documents ready," Her low voice sent jitters down my spine, forcing me to look up at her. Her eyes were even puffier, and that sent me off the rader.

Why?

I can't tell….

It's been so long since I felt this concerned about anyone. But it was none of my business, so I decided not to pry. Besides, I don't want to make her more upset.

"Let's go," My knees brushed the desk as I stood up and grabbed my jacket. With my hands plunged inside my pocket, I headed out of my office with the sound of her heels following clumsily behind me.

"Mr Ravenscroft, the investors are here. And they are waiting eagerly for your arrival." I turned around, and it was the manager of the company, Mr Steve speaking.

I walked past him with my long legs ahead of everyone. Immediately we reached the hallway, every employee on the way stopped walking for me to pass whilst saying their greetings.

Good morning, Mr Ravenscroft….

"Miss Skylar, let me have the documents you prepared. I may need to change some things." I demanded, but there was no response.

I paused in my track and turned, and everyone halted along with me. My eyes caught sight of her, and there she was, walking slowly far behind with a stack of documents clamped tightly to her chest.

"Miss Skylar…" I called out with my tone slightly high and stern.

She heard this time and quickly looked up at me, her eyes widened, and I heaved a deep sigh in frustration.

"The documents?" I demanded, and she ran towards me.

A snap on the floor echoed in the hallways, and before I could ask what it was, Skylar was flying in the air towards my direction.

My mind went into reflex, and I immediately caught her. I grabbed her waist firmly while her body was spurred all over me.

She looked up at me and our eyes locked in an instant, availing me the opportunity to study her face.

Her brows creased perfectly, complimenting her pointed nose and thin pink lips.

Her wet eyelashes fluttered, making me quiver. I could feel my heartbeat accelerate and my veins popping out of my neck.

I immediately pushed her away and took a few steps back.

"I'm so sorry, Mr Ravenscroft… I didn't mean for that to happen. I tripped and wasn't looking…." Her voice cracked into sobs, and I couldn't help but wonder why she was being overly emotional this afternoon.

"Just hand it over…." My shaky voice dominated her sobs, and she stretched her hands with the documents, and her head bowed.

"What nonsense is this!!" My voice thundered, and everyone passing by froze on the spot.

"I specifically made a request for the Pacific files." My nose flared with my eyes darkened with anger. I threw the document at her, and she picked it up her with her hands, fidgeting and tears streaming down her face.

"I'm sorry…" She began to say.

"Enough!"

"I'm tired of hearing you say sorry. If you knew you were not capable of being my assistant, you should have never applied." I could not hold back my words.

"I thought you were at least determined, even though you are not qualified, but I can see you are nothing but a cry baby. Do you know what it takes to run a company?"

"I need everyone to be on their ten toes, but you can't even get a document right. Maybe I made a mistake hiring you, after all." I groaned with my palm on my forehead.

"What did you just say?" She demanded authoritatively, and I was shocked.

"What!" I wondered.

"Fine!" She slammed the documents on the floor and stamped her feet on it.

"Do you think I want to work here either?" Her voice echoed, and everyone gasped.

"Uhmm…" I stammered.

"Answer me!!!" She yelled.

"You think I want to put up with a narcissist, arrogant, and cruel person like you? You really pride yourself, whereas you are just a nobody who was only fortunate to be born into wealth." Her breath shook, and I could see her cleavage moving up and down in rhythm.

"So what if I made a mistake? No one is perfect, even though you think you are, but you are really not. I'm done trying to please you." She stamped her leg on the floor dramatically.

"You lack so much empathy, and it shows. I can't imagine how lonely it must feel to be you." Her words rang in my ear, hitting me like a hard blow and my face twisted.

"Keep your stupid job because I don't want it anymore." Her fist clenched with anger. She removed her ID card and threw it at me. It hit my face before dropping on the floor.

Oh my goodness…..

Is she crazy….

She must have really lost her mind….

How could she do that to him….

She must have a death wish or something….

Gasps, murmurs, and gossip immediately spread with a multitude of employees gathered at the scene.

She gave me a deadly stare before turning around and walking away.

Suddenly, she stopped and turned around.

"One more thing, Tristan Ravenscroft." She mentioned my name in full, and my eyes almost popped out.

"Go to hell…" The words jumped out of her mouth without hesitation, and she turned around, walking away for real this time.
