Morning light streamed through the curtains as James slowly opened his eyes. A small giggle made him glance down—his daughter, Lilly, was sitting on his belly, bouncing slightly.
Lilly: "Wake up, Dad!"
Lucy (his wife): "Good morning, honey."
James: "Morning… What time is it?"
Lucy: "It's 6:30, I think."
Lilly: "Daddy, it's Sunday! Can we go on a picnic?"
James: "Okay, but let me sleep for five more minutes…"
Lilly: "No, no, no! Wake up! Wake up, Dad!"
Suddenly, James's phone rang. He sighed, grabbed it from the side table, and answered.
James: "Hello? Who's this?"
Unknown Voice (female): "Sir… there's been another murder."
James sat up immediately.
James: "What? Where?"
Unknown: "In the forest—the same place where we found two bodies yesterday."
James: "Who is this speaking?"
The call disconnected.
James: "Hello? Hello?"
Lucy: "What happened?"
James: "I'm not sure. Some unknown number. A woman said there's been another murder… Something about this case feels strange."
Lucy: "It's okay, hon. Sometimes, to catch a killer, you need to think like one. And the closer you get, the harder the case becomes."
Lilly: "Daddy… so no picnic?"
James (softly): "I'm sorry, sweetheart. We can't go today. But we'll plan another, okay? Lucy, take care of her. I'll be back soon."
James arrived at the forest. A police officer was studying a footprint on the ground. James walked up to him.
James: "Officer, I'm James—the detective assigned to this case."
Officer: "Oh, sir."
James: "Any evidence?"
Officer: "Not much, sir. Just a nail scratch on a tree and these footprints."
James: "Where are the bodies? And have they been identified?"
Officer: "Yes, sir. They're Antony and Marco. The other two bodies from yesterday are also here."
James walked over to the ambulance and examined the corpses. Their bodies were partially eaten—gruesome and horrifying. Nearby, a woman in a white coat caught his eye.
James: "Doctor, I'm Detective James—"
Cloe (smiling in surprise): "James? It's me, Cloe. Wow, it's been what—three years?"
James: "Cloe! Yeah… it's been a while. So how've you been?"
Cloe: "I'm good. How's Lucy?"
James: "She's fine. But let's get to the case. Any idea how they died?"
Cloe: "Animal attack, possibly. Something ate them, or at least part of them. We're still analyzing. I'll send you the full report soon."
James: "Hmm."
Cloe:" Anyway… how old is your daughter now?"
James (smiling): "She turns six tomorrow."
Cloe: "Tomorrow? It's her birthday?! Tell her I said happy birthday!"
James: "Why don't you tell her yourself? We're having a small party at home. I'll send you the address."
Cloe (grinning): "I'd love that."
Later, James wandered deeper into the woods. His eyes caught something odd—blue-tinted liquid smeared on a tree. He called over the officers and forensic team.
James: "Get samples of this. Examine everything."
As he turned to head back to the ambulance, something on the ground caught his eye—an axe.
James: "This… it's a woodcutter's axe. What's it doing here?"
Cloe approached from behind.
Cloe: "What is it, James?"
James: "An axe. Could be evidence. Get it tested for fingerprints."
Cloe (confused): "Me? Why me?"
James: "Because you're the doctor and the forensic lead."
He returned to the ambulance and looked over the four bodies—two male, two female—all found within the last 24 hours. James felt something was off.
That night…
James sat in his study, reviewing every detail of the case. His mind raced.
James (thinking): How did these people die? An animal? Or… is C42 happening again? No… that case was closed years ago. This is just another murder... right?
His phone rang again. Unknown number. He picked it up.
James: "Hello?"
Cloe (serious tone): "James, it's me. I have the results."
James: "Yeah? What did you find?"
Cloe: "That blue liquid—it's blood. But it's not just human. It's a mix… human DNA fused with spider DNA. The spider genes altered the color."
James froze.
James: "Human and what?!"
James (mind racing): Is C42… happening again? I should have killed her when I had the chance…
His hand trembled. The nightmare wasn't over.
