Chapter 2 - Time to Choose

After glancing around the classroom, he knew this was definitely his new school. But an uneasy feeling crept over him. He was going to miss his old friends. More than that, he was about to become "the new kid." That thought alone sent a chill down his spine. "I wish Wane could transfer here too," he thought. "We've been through so much together." But he quickly brushed the idea away. Wayne's family couldn't afford this school, and just a few months ago, neither could his family. It still felt unreal how quickly things had changed for his family.

Kyle's dad's promotion was the big change that turned their lives upside down. The news came with a major shift—it meant moving to another state because his dad was now in charge of one of the company's biggest branches.

For years, Mr. Mesh had worked tirelessly at Colomen Oil and Gas, earning just enough to get by. The salary wasn't great, and it was tough giving his family even a simple, comfortable life. He had always hoped and prayed for a promotion, dreaming of the day when he could provide more for his family. Finally, that day had come, and things were starting to look up for them.

His wife, Mrs. Alma Mesh, had been an unwavering pillar of support throughout the years. She worked as a receptionist at a nearby pharmaceutical company, using her earnings to help her husband manage their home. Tall and slender with a glowing fair complexion, she possessed a striking elegance. Her features were so finely crafted that it seemed as if God Himself had meticulously sculpted her—especially her delicate, perfectly positioned nose, which looked almost too flawless to be real.

It was hard to believe that such a slender frame had brought three children into the world. Alma carried herself with the grace of someone untouched by the toll of motherhood, her radiant appearance belying the demands of raising a family.

Kyle's younger siblings, Sam and Olive, were no exception to the whirlwind of school preparations.

While Kyle and their dad were busy at Reginand High School, Mrs. Mesh and the two younger children were visiting Kynard Schools. The school checked all the boxes, meeting their expectations, and they were quick to decide it was the right fit for Sam and Olive. Mrs. Mesh smiled to herself, thinking back to the days when her first priority was examining the school bills before even considering a visit. "Things are so different now," she murmured. Now, she could afford any school she desired—proof that no situation is permanent.

Exhausted from the busy day, the family decided to unwind at a local restaurant and discuss their next steps. Mr. Mesh and Kyle were the first to arrive, settling into a cozy corner where they could enjoy some privacy. Kyle, visibly tired and hungry, let out a half-cheerful, half-complaining sigh. "What's taking them so long, Dad? I'm starving!" he muttered, his tone caught somewhere between frustration and good humor.
