FLASHBACK

"Congratulations, you're now a Midnight Ambassador!"

The chairman adored looking at young Milo, who wore a grey soldier uniform with a golden sun symbol on his back and a mini crown on each shoulder.

The chairman was a strategic but loose man. He always wore a large jumper and gloves. His Kyoku element was Ice, so everyone assumed his fashion choice had something to do with his powers.

"Thank you, sir," Milo replied.

"Your father would be proud of you!" he added.

Milo's father was killed when he was a 9 year old. Investigations concluded he was attacked by powerful assassin's who might have had a grudge against him. Other details about the killers were kept under wraps, leaving Milo to wonder what really happened.

Just then, two knocks were heard at the door.

"Yes! Come in!!" the chairman called out.

"You wanted to see me, sir?"

"Yes, Midnight Conor. This is your new mission partner—Midnight Milo!!!"

Both Milo and Conor exclaimed in surprise.

"He is what!!!" they began arguing, pointing at each other.

"I can never team up with him; he will just weigh me down!"

"No, you will weigh me down; I'm stronger than you!"

"You're not stronger than me!!"

The chairman's serious tone silenced them.

"If you don't work together, I will personally strip you of your titles."

Silence filled the office for a few seconds.

Then suddenly…

"My partner?" Milo inquired.

"Yes, partner," Conor replied.

"Wanna go to lunch?"

"You never had to ask, partner!!"

They clapped each other's shoulders and exited the office.

Their partnership, though problematic, would become the most destructive team of their generation. Milo's control over air and Conor's Rigged Luck element proved fatal.

BACK INTO THE PRESENT

Milo sat at the corner of the restaurant. A boy carrying a blue school bag walked in, concentrated on the beautiful receptionist behind the counter, her breast overlapping her uniform.

Milo's battle senses activated—a chance to find the truth about his father's death—but there was a problem: no bloodlust was dripping from him. Milo had faced many killers and could usually tell at a glance.

This kid is a pervert! he concluded disappointedly.

Ross lingered on her chest for a few seconds, daydreaming about their life together, marriage, children, and all sorts of weird stuff.

A shout from the waiter broke his daydream.

"He wants rice and beans!!"

"Okay," the receptionist replied, writing down the order.

"Hallo, Emily," the dreamer asked.

"Hi, Ross."

"How is your day going?" she inquired.

"Great! And you?"

"Great too. What can I get you?"

"Are my parents around?" Ross asked.

"Yeah, let me call them!" the receptionist replied, going to the back room with the note.

Ross' focus didn't change. He escorted her behind the small red door.

"Who's that kid?" Milo inquired.

"He's the chef's son."

"Well, they don't look alike," he added, looking at the pictures to check for similarities.

"Rumor says they adopted him," the waiter added.

The backroom door opened. Ross's mom appeared first, followed by Emily.

"You finished early at school? What's wrong?"

"The teacher chickened out because of the commotion caused by the threat. I'm just here for fries!"

"Alright. Emily will give you—Am busy in the back."

"Alright, madam!" she interjected, going to a fast-food panel at the receptionist desk.

"Ross!!!" the waiter near Milo called.

"Yeah, Bridget, how are you doing?"

"Fine!! Ross, this is my friend Milo. He is an ambassador," she whispered.

"Thank you for keeping us safe, sir," Ross saluted

.

"No need for formals. Besides, I'm just the papers guy," Milo shared.

"Those muscles say otherwise!!" Ross thought.

"Stop it—that's still helping, you know," she added.

"Stop it, I'm brushing," Milo smiled for a couple of seconds.

This kid's Kyoku—it's at a high frequency but silent. Aah, I get it; that's why many people miss it. If not for my ability, who knows what would have happened, Milo thought.

"Ross, your fries are ready."

"Coming!! Nice meeting you, sir."

"You too, Ross!"

The dreamer retrieved his package and exited the restaurant.

A few minutes after eating lunch, Milo decided to follow Ross. Now that he had met the source, detecting his Kyoku frequency was easy.

He just had to make the air particles resonate with Ross's frequency thereby creating an invisible trail only he could follow.

The particles led him to a large residence near a market. The house was surrounded by a white wooden fence. A patch of ground lay between the fence and the house.

Milo sat on an apartment that was far but visible from the suspect, waiting.

Nothing out of the ordinary happened. His parents came in at 8 PM, had a spat, but quickly made up. Ross played loud video games during their argument.

Around midnight, a squad of mutant cockroaches emerged from the shadows, antennae twitching as they homed in on the house, attracted by food scraps.

The alpha cockroach was the first to attempt breaking into the house. It contracted its stomach, pulling toxic substances into its mouth, preparing to bleach the walls.

"Woooh! Pwah!" A black katana appeared out of nowhere, stabbing it through the head. Green fluid gushed like a fountain.

"Ehejej!" the insects exclaimed in fear, turning to retreat—but a foot to another's head stopped them.

Ross had jumped from the window, landing a surprise attack. He wore red pajamas with black mouse symbols, hair messy, complementing a deformed smile he had been perfecting for a long time.

"Your not going anywhere!!" he threatened.

"You can hear us?" the insects pleaded.

"Yes. You can't hide anything from me," Ross said.

"We are sorry! Just let us go—we never meant you harm!"

"If I let you go, you will harm other people!"

"No, we won't! We beg you!"

" Alright then go as long as you Promise to never harm humans ever again !"

"Really- Yeah you have word!"

"We promise !!"

" At the count of 3 i want you out of here"

"lets go Bonar!"

"1" the cockroaches run for their lives, but they still lingered In the premises.

"2" a few steps to freedom.

"3" the cockroaches where now out by a few centimeters, there smiles altering as they anticipated relief.

Before they could laugh two identical katana's struck them down, as It did to there leader, blood gushed onto the ground.

Milo murmered as he pulled out His katanas from the cockroache's corpses"That is for breaking My fence."

Blood gushed onto the ground.

Ross wiped the blades clean on their bodies.

"Disintegrate," he said, the blades including the one he used to kill their leader slowly faded away into pieces.

Beneath the ground emerged a massive hound, dark as darkness itself, swallowing the insect remains before vanishing.

Ross spent a few seconds collecting broken wood around the fence, then turned pointing at the exact spot Milo had been hiding.

"Yo, Milo! How long are you planning to stay up there? Come help with the fence!"
