Chapter 32 - Chapter 32

[MY DEEPEST APOLOGIES]

......

Finally, some peace and quiet. I watched the car disappear down the road as they headed to the hospital. I lost my emotions a long time ago, I sat on a log and looked at my hands- the hands of the monster my own blood created.

My mind drifted back to the betrayal, the one person I believed, I trusted to be by my side after our parents died, my sister, she didn't. Instead, she used me as a subject in her twisted experiment, apparently, my parents found out about her "experiments" that's why she killed them. She used me as a lab rat, moving from test to test, pain to pain, superpower to superpower, all piled in my small body. I forgot how to think, how to talk, how to scream, how to breathe, I forgot myself, the pressure was too much, it bubbled up to the surface; I escaped, but I lost something, my sanity.

I became a monster through and through, I killed anything that moved, that breathe, women, men, elders, even children, I just kept moving, I saw 'her' face everywhere, I saw those doctors, whispering sweet nothings, pretending to be gentle while pumping my veins with poison. In the madness, I went on a rampage, slaughtering anything that even remotely came near me. Some made it out alive though, they built a new life, far away from the monster I had become.

It took years, centuries in fact, to get my sanity back. 'Her' experiments created an undying soldier, an 'immortal' some might say, so I spent time wandering. I found the new settlement made by the survivors, they're thriving, "Thank God". I didn't stay in their midst, instead, I made myself a small place in the woods near them. A day came, when I met a little vampire girl. She was being used for research by her own family, used as a specimen to be studied not love. I destroyed them and saved her from them. From that day on, she followed me around, like a chick following a mother hen.

We lived our days in peace and quiet, sometimes we'd walk around the town, go hunting in the woods, and come back, it was peaceful. I was a fool to think 'she' would just let me go like that, of course she wouldn't let go of her greatest "success". She returned with a team of doctors and an army of soldiers. The battle was close, 'she' was desperate, so was I, I used my spatial ability to send the vampire girl away to safety, I couldn't go with her, I had to fight, I had to free myself. I lost. The centuries that passed, 'she' created more, people with powers, 'she' turned them into mindless soldiers, none were as good as me, but they had the numbers. In a final, desperate act to keep myself from being taken again, to keep myself from being made into a weapon, like the others, I sealed my soul, I lost my body, and my one precious thing: the pendant, the only thing left of my parents. "I hope the little girl can live well, please don't let them find her. I didn't get to give her a name yet."

Time passed, I didn't know if it has been days, or years, or even centuries, I couldn't tell, I just floated there, until I found myself in the body of another child; a boy whose own mother was using him as a sacrifice. I used what was left of my power to save him, killing the woman and her subordinates. "Why do I keep ending up in these situations?" To spare the child of the horror of what had happened, I sealed his memories and retreated into the dark corners of his mind, remaining a dormant soul while he lived his life.

I woke only when he was in danger again, I didn't help this time, I let him handle it. He has powers, I didn't know how or why, I wanted to know, so I tried to come out, it overwhelmed him, almost killed him. I couldn't let him die, not now, so I kept him alive, months went by, they found him, finally. Things spiraled after that, eventually, the cycle ended when the little vampire, now grown, found us. I don't know what she did, but she managed to separate me from the boy and place me back into my original, immortal body.

Now, I stand here in this very woods where it all happened, searching for what was lost. My parents' pendant, it's here somewhere, buried under years of grass and roots, it is the only thing that ties me to the boy before all the grief and pain, to the boy before the experiments, I will find it.

I moved through the woods, back to the tree stump, back where it ended. It has to be there, somewhere.

"Where is it?"

I searched around the tree stump, my hands digging into the soil, I couldn't use my powers yet, I just had my physical body. I kept digging, kept searching, nothing. I stood trying to remember how everything happened, I tried to visualize it, my position, 'her' position, the positions of the soldiers, the doctors. I lost myself in the memories of the past, from the moment I sent the little vampire away, what happened next?

...

Centuries ago....

The forest, our home was no longer at peace, it has become a battle field. 'She' stood at the front, flanked by her team of doctors, her soldiers, surrounding us from every corner, there was no escape. I could feel the little vampires hand trembling as she gripped my coat.

"L-leave my brother alone!"

She screamed, her fists digging into the fabric of my coat, her perceived debt binding her to the side that was clearly losing.

"Little girl, this matter does not concern you-" I didn't let 'her' finish

"Do not speak to her!" I growled

"You know, you will lose this fight, I had centuries to prepare, There is no escape, give up now." 'she' said

I ignored her, I could see the soldiers charging up, 'I can't protect her' I realized.

"Go" I whispered to the little vampire.

I didn't wait for her to realize what was happening, she's stubborn, she won't go on her own. I reached out and tore into the fabric of reality, using my spatial ability, I created a portal, I don't know where it led, I didn't care, as long as it was far away from here. I shoved her into the portal, watching as she disappeared into it, eyes brimming with tears and confusion.

"We will meet again, I promise, I give you my word" I said as she vanished into the portal and it closed. I felt a small sense of relief, even as the first line of attack reached me.
