Chapter 14 - Sparks on Stone

The arena was silent save for the low hum of the Heaven-Seizing Combat Array, its translucent boundary walls shimmering faintly.

Edran Kaelith and Kael Varrow stood twenty paces apart, the light from the Array casting shifting patterns across their faces.

Neither spoke.

The moment the faint gong sounded, Kael moved.

It wasn't just speed — it was the brutal, trained efficiency of a Peak-Stage Qi Condensation cultivator. His feet struck the stone in a blur, and each step bloomed into a puff of searing heat. Scorching Step. The arena's air warped with the rising temperature, and the sharp tang of burning dust filled the audience's noses.

Edran's eyes narrowed. The mid-stage breakthrough he'd achieved days ago still sang in his meridians, but it was a tempered, quiet strength. His stance shifted, knees bending, weight sinking.

A streak of red-hot steel thrust toward his chest.

Vermillion Fang Strike.

Kael's spear carried a tight spiral of fire qi along its shaft, the tip glowing white-hot. The instant before contact, the spear flared, the compressed qi detonating forward.

Edran's hands moved, earth qi flooding into his forearms. His palms slammed together, and the flagstones beneath him cracked. A slab of compacted rock surged upward — Stoneflow Guard.

The spear met the earthen shield with a deafening crack. Heat flared; shards of stone hissed into steam. The force drove Edran back three steps, his boots grinding furrows into the arena floor.

Kael didn't pause. The spear twisted away, pivoting low, then came around in a sweeping arc. Fire coiled along the weapon like a serpent before snapping outward.

Phoenix Wing Sweep.

The burning crescent tore across the space between them, licking the Array walls. Edran's brow creased. His foot brushed the stone, earth qi sinking in — Shifting Pebble Step. The ground beneath his opponent's predicted path subtly shifted, and Edran's body flowed aside with the change, the fiery arc searing past close enough to scorch the edge of his sleeve.

A murmur ran through the crowd. Kael's dominance was palpable.

"Peak-Stage Qi Condensation versus Mid-Stage…" one spectator muttered. "It's like watching a hawk toy with a sparrow."

Kael's expression didn't change. He advanced with the same cold precision, spear lancing forward again. His fire qi burned clean, no waste in circulation — a testament to years of disciplined cultivation.

Edran blocked, the Stoneflow Guard reforming, but each strike left hairline fractures in the shield faster than they could close.

A sudden feint — Kael's spear dipped low, then his left foot slammed down with a burst of heat, breaking his stance. Scorching Step surged again, launching him upward. The spear whistled down in a brutal overhand smash.

Edran met it, but the impact was heavier than expected. The shield cracked completely, and the force jarred his arms, the heat biting at his skin even through his qi layer.

"Your defense won't last," Kael said flatly, his first words of the match.

Edran didn't reply. His breathing was even, though his arms throbbed. His gaze was locked not on Kael's weapon, but on the subtle movements of his wrists and ankles — the tiny tells before each technique release.

Another thrust — Vermillion Fang Strike again — this one sharper, the spiral of fire qi wound tighter, detonating with more force.

Edran angled his shield, letting the strike glance off, but Kael flowed into another Phoenix Wing Sweep without losing rhythm. Fire flared across the arena once more, and this time, the edge caught Edran's shoulder. The heat seared cloth and skin, the scent of scorched fabric drifting upward.

The audience roared approval at Kael's dominance.

Inside the Array, Edran shifted his stance again. His feet pressed into the stone, sensing the faint vibrations Kael's movements sent through the ground. The crowd saw him as barely holding on. Kael likely thought the same.

But Edran's mind was running cold calculations.

The exact pace of Kael's qi circulation.

The slight delay between Scorching Step bursts.

The half-second window after Phoenix Wing Sweep where Kael's spear left his centerline exposed.

Another Vermillion Fang Strike came. Edran met it with Stoneflow Guard, letting the heat wash over him while subtly shifting his right foot.

Kael pressed forward, confident. The fire on his spear burned brighter, his movements unbroken. He drove Edran toward the Array wall, the temperature around them climbing.

The spear lashed out again — and this time, Edran didn't fully block. He let the point glance off his forearm guard, twisting with it. The movement drew Kael's momentum slightly forward, the balance shift almost invisible to anyone else.

The stone beneath Edran's boots rippled faintly. His qi gathered low in his dantian, compressing — the prelude to something that would not be purely defensive.

Kael noticed the change. His brows drew together slightly.

Still, he lunged. Phoenix Wing Sweep burst forth again, fire cutting through the air.

And Edran… moved into it.

The chapter ends there — with Kael's attack descending, the crowd certain of the outcome, and Edran's qi flaring in a way no one expected.
