Chapter 1 - Worst Call

Tyler

The cop spoke to me in a flat voice. "Your mother is dead."

I choked on my cup.

I wished it was a prank, but it wasn't. But I wished it were.

I turned to the phone with a faint frown between my brows. "Excuse me? Is this a joke?"

I could tell through the phone it was a man, a man who seemed weary and bored with life, so his words became harsher. "I said your mother passed away two hours ago. You need to come to the station, and since you're the son, you have the right to decide what to do with the body."

'Bullshit,' I said in my head.

I walked away from my friend's house and went outside. I ignored the stares behind me and closed the door.

I felt my chest tightening. "Hold on, how did my mother die? She was fine two hours ago."

The man spoke again, "I'm sorry, but I can't talk about this over the phone, so you will have to come to this station."

I clenched my hands, and I wanted to shout at the man. I wanted to tell him that this person was my mother. My mother, so I had the right to know.

I tried to breathe through my nose calmly, so I said through my gritted teeth, "Alright. I'll be there shortly. I'll need the address of the station."

"I'll send the location to your phone."

The man said nonchalantly before hanging up.

I stared at the sky. Dull. White-grayish. Just like my mood.

I didn't know exactly what I was feeling. I felt confused, anxious, fearful, and everything else. My hands trembled on the phone.

Sure, my mom and I don't get along sometimes, but she was the only family I had left. She provided for me and looked out for me.

The more I looked at it, my feelings turned to bitterness; I remembered arguing with my mother about two hours ago.

Something over stupid. Very stupid.

The door behind me opened wide with a click. "Is everything alright?"

A voice asked with a hint of concern.

I turned to my friend. Nino, who had green eyes and black eyes.

I replied in a rough voice. "My mom is dead."

He looked at me with shock in his gaze. "What? What happened?"

I shake my head. "I don't know. She died two hours ago; I need to go to the station and find out."

Nino nodded and asked, "Do you want me to take you there?"

I shake my head. I need to be alone; I need to think right now. My brain is all scattered all over the place.

"No. I'll use my motorcycle to get there."

Nino narrowed his eyes. "That's dangerous, and you're not in a good state. I don't mind dropping you off. For real."

I faintly smiled half mockingly, "Don't worry, buddy. I'll be careful. I just need to clear up my mind."

Nino looked at me with a hidden concern. I was grateful, but I needed to be alone. Right now, I feel in a dark spot in my mind.

I turned around and climbed on my motorcycle. The motorcycle was large and big, shiny like an obsidian rock.

The motorcycle made a loud noise like a humming purring sound as I moved into the streets, driving faster than other cars.

With the helmet on my head, my mind became calmer like the wind and sharper, and then I thought about my mother, who passed away.

My grip tightened.

I was flying—too fast.

I eased off the brakes, heart still pounding.

The other cars beside me honked, and the old man behind the window glared at me like I was some troublemaker.

I flipped him off. Yeah. The big "fuck you."

The man widened his eyes.

I grinned.

I drove past his car and turned away from him.

I drove away, the wind flying by me. I looked around and observed my surroundings. It's hard to believe I was speaking to my mom an hour ago, but then she died two hours later, all of a sudden.

What happened?

A hot, burning anger grew within me. If anyone has anything to do with it, they'll pay for it with their life.

A loud honking sound echoes across my ears. I lifted my head toward my rear side and saw a black car speeding toward me like a racing car.

I lifted my eyes in surprise. It was that old man's car. Why was he speeding toward me?

When I looked in the mirror, a murderous face stared at me like it wanted to kill me.

My heart picked up speed. I looked in front of me and realized I couldn't speed up any faster. There were only cars.

And my right side was trapped by other cars rolling in. So, I had no choice but to drive to my left.

I clenched on the handlebars and drove to the left lane. The wheels left a screeching noise across the cement road. And my heart pounded like a drum.

I had to push the wheels fast; otherwise, the other cars would've hit me.

The realization sent a shocking jolt through me, and then I looked back behind me. I saw the other car that was chasing me crash into another car that was in front of me.

Then I turned back to the front with my heart racing, almost slowing down.

Almost.

Someone was walking across the sidewalk with grocery bags.

And I was heading in his direction, getting closer and closer.

I cried out, "Get out of the way!"

The young man turns in my direction with a surprised look.

At that moment, his green eyes were as sharp as glass. Not soft. Not feminine. But something about him stopped my breath.

He had the palest green eyes akin to the leaves, but before I could have a chance to admire them more.

The other man narrowed his green eyes at me and jumped to the other side, with the bags falling to the ground.

I didn't know it yet, but that face would ruin me.
