Chapter 1 - Cold meets quiet

The morning sun streaked in through the window blinds settling on Nyra's face. Her alarm blared, shattering the quiet, and she sleepily struggled to turn it off, frustration twisting her features. It was 6:30am

"Ugh, why does morning have to come so quick, weekends never last. Ugh I hate Mondays." she said with frustration

Nyra Averis — an eighteen-year-old, tall, brown-skinned, slim and beautiful — was an introvert to the bone. She found socializing exhausting and the company of strangers even more so. She had just started university and Mondays were torture, packed to the brim with classes.

She rushed to the bathroom to get ready. She wore a black suit dress that stopped a little above her knees and ankle-length heeled boots. She gathered the top half of her curls into a loose knot, and left the rest to cascade down her back in a spill of dark spirals. After putting on a few pieces of jewelry, she headed to the kitchen to make breakfast.

Shortly after, she left for school. It was a sunny day, the trees swayed under the guidance of the wind, and the air was fresh and clean. Birds chirped in the distance. The hum of car engines and laughter from students filled the campus as they made their way to their respective faculties and classes.

Today, like every other Monday, was loaded with classes from morning till evening

"Oh shoot, it's 7:36 already, I need to be in class in the next 10 minutes, I can't afford to be late" she said as she quickened her steps.

After arriving at the class she found a seat next to her best friend from high school.

"Hi Tina, how was your weekend?" Nyra asked

"what weekend? It was gone in a flash" Tina replied with a sigh, her voice brimming with exhaustion.

By 8am sharp the lecturer was in the hall.

Everyone straightened in their seats, exchanging nervous glances upon his arrival.

"shut the doors, no one is allowed in after me" the lecturer said.

Mr Jorren Avidar, a tall, brown, slim, muscular man in his thirties, he had a face that made many turn. A straight nose, strong jawline and cheekbones. Despite his looks he was known as a very strict lecturer, making many wary of him.

The day went by slowly, boring and classes were over by 3pm.

"Tina I'm heading home, see you tomorrow" said Nyra, a tinge of excitement in her voice, thankful that the evening classes were cancelled

"Already? Wait a while so we can go together"

"No need, I also need to stop by the grocery store. See you tomorrow" Nyra replied seemingly in a hurry to leave.

On her way home she got a message from her sister. Eyes on her phone with a bottle of drink in her other hand, walking down the road, she was so focused that she didn't realize someone was in front of her—

*Bump*

She hit him. The bottle jolted in her hand and cold liquid splashed across a black sleeve.

"I'm so sorry," Nyra blurted, her voice catching. "I was carried away for a moment. I didn't mean —"

She looked up and the rest of her words vanished.

Before her stood a man, dauntingly tall and muscular, his frame broad beneath the dark fabric. Beauty like his was dangerous — every line cut sharp, every edge unsoftened, as if he had been carved for war not affection.

Her pulse thudded against her throat as his gaze met hers — cold, unreadable, still as deep water. It wasn't just a look, it was a silent appraisal, like he was weighing her worth and finding it irrelevant.High cheekbones, strong jawline that spoke of unbending will, and his lips — pale and unsmiling — held a quiet edge of disdain.

Nyra's fingers tightened around the bottle, suddenly aware of her own heartbeat in her ears. His face was a masterpiece of ice, flawless and forbidding. The kind of beauty that dared you to come closer, knowing you would shatter against it.

There was no softness in him, yet the sheer perfection of his face drew the eyes the way a cliff's edge draws the reckless.

He wiped the drink from his sleeve with deliberate slowness. "You're lucky I'm in a good mood." The faintest smirk played on his lips, though his eyes were anything but amused. Then he turned to walk away without a glance back.

Frozen in place, her heart thudding, she stood, unsure whether she had just met a man or a storm.

Just then she was jolted back to reality by the ringing of her phone.

It was her sister.
