Chapter 1 - Fall

"The sky is so blue…"

Under normal circumstances, you'd probably assume I was someone pausing to admire the beauty of the world, the vast expanse of blue above, the drifting white clouds, and the birds flying gracefully through the sky.

But if you knew that I was currently several hundred metres in the air and falling rapidly toward the ground, I doubt you'd think I was marvelling at nature's charm anymore.

And if you still did, then I'm afraid you might have even bigger issues than I do.

The wind screamed past me, and moments later, my back slammed into the ground with such force that it probably left a crater.

Overwhelming pain ripped through every nerve in my body the instant I hit the ground.

A scream forced its way up my throat, only to be cut short midway, strangled into a choked gasp as the sickening crack of bones echoed.

The back of my head began to feel warm, and I didn't need to reach up to know it was blood. When I coughed, blood spilt from my lips, splattering down my chin.

They say when you feel real pain, you won't even be able to scream.

Guess that was true, huh?

This must be how all those monsters I'd tossed off cliffs had felt.

Flat on my back, I stared up at the sky from the bottom of the ravine, the jagged cliffs rising high on either side. Bits of broken rock, fragments of the shattered ledge I'd fallen from, rained down all around me, slamming into the earth with heavy thuds.

Somehow, none of them landed on my face and squashed my skull to paste.

Such a thought drifted through my mind as I felt my life gradually slipping away from me.

Understanding how I ended up in this situation would probably take a fair amount of context.
