Chapter 27 - Chapter 27 - Silent Judgment

They arrived at church just in the nick of time. Collins and Miranda Holden barely managed to lock their car and slip inside the sanctuary before the service began. Not bothering to search for their aunt and uncle, they slid into the last pew, feeling the weight of several curious stares.

Father Cate's disapproving gaze landed firmly on Collins's protruding belly, his expression hardening as he continued his sermon. It took Miranda only minutes to realize that today's message about moral decay and family values was pointedly directed at her pregnant sister.

Miranda's blood began to boil. How typical of this backward town to judge so harshly while knowing nothing about their circumstances. She shifted in her seat, preparing to stand and walk out in protest. Collins's hand clamped down on hers, holding her firmly in place.

"Let it go," Collins whispered. "We always knew this place was trapped in the past."
