On the arena stage, Sun Moon Team's Shi Xing was thoroughly toyed with by Wang Dong'er, leaving him utterly humiliated. Enraged, he no longer held back. With the clear intention of killing Wang Dong'er, he brought out his proudest soul tool — a sixth-level soul tool: the Scorching Flame Heavy Cannon, which was equipped with a target-locking system.
"Go to hell!" Shi Xing roared as he pulled the trigger. A terrifying crimson column of fire erupted from the heavy cannon. The flame briefly paused mid-air before transforming into a massive fireball. The intense heat distorted the surrounding air with waves of ripples, and in an instant, the fireball surged toward Wang Dong'er.
Faced with such a fearsome attack, Wang Dong'er didn't show the slightest intent to dodge. Instead, under the spectators' held breath, she opened her arms as if to embrace the fireball. In that instant, a black soul ring lit up brilliantly, and her slender figure transformed into a translucent golden crystal, radiating a dreamy glow.
Light Goddess Butterfly's Fifth Soul Skill — Divine Light Possession!
Once activated, for three seconds, Wang Dong'er transforms into a body of light-element, immune to all elemental and physical attacks except darkness. Additionally, her next soul skill released will have double the power and deal triple damage to dark-element beings.
That fireball, like a miniature sun, closed in, but Wang Dong'er's crystalline body released golden ripples of light. Like the refraction of crystal, they shone onto the oncoming cannonball and instantly suppressed its terrifying momentum. Without hesitation, she clapped her arms together, catching the massive shell in her embrace.
A mocking smile tugged at her lips. "Here, take it back."
She hoisted the fireball overhead, then hurled it down with full strength. With the added acceleration from her throw, the fireball's might only grew, leaving a red-gold trail as it tore through the air toward Shi Xing.
His face turned ashen, but he didn't hesitate to activate his invincible shield. The fireball struck the shield head-on. A powerful explosion erupted, engulfing the arena in blinding flames. When the light faded, the originally flat arena was pockmarked with craters, and Shi Xing stood there pale-faced.
Though his shield had absorbed the brunt of the explosion, most of his soul power was depleted. Even the fifth-level invincible shield he held had been severely damaged. Victory was no longer within reach for him.
Then, he realized — Wang Dong'er was gone! Dread filled him as he looked up, only to hear a mocking voice above: "Idiot, look up!"
He lifted his head. Wang Dong'er had already prepared her next strike, and the moment their eyes met, she unleashed it. Shi Xing hurriedly activated his nearly shattered shield again and poured in the last of his soul power to block the attack.
"I surrender!" he cried in desperation. Wang Dong'er's attack showed no mercy, and his shield quickly crumbled. With his power drained, despair overwhelmed him, and he shouted his surrender.
The moment the words left his mouth, Wang Dong'er gracefully halted and landed, a playful smirk on her face. When the referee ordered her to stop, she responded with a few biting remarks about his bias.
The referee reluctantly announced, "First round of individual elimination, Tang Sect wins!"
Before he finished speaking, a scream echoed from above. A figure plummeted from the sky, and the referee barely managed to catch him — it was Shi Xing. But he was barely breathing, and in the blink of an eye, like a drop of water under the scorching sun, his life slipped away before the referee could save him.
"You! You killed him!" the referee shouted at Wang Dong'er, enraged.
Wang Dong'er feigned innocence. "Which of your eyes saw me kill him? I stepped down the moment he surrendered. I was next to you the whole time."
Shi Xing's sudden death infuriated the Sun Moon Team. Though they knew Wang Dong'er was the culprit, they had no concrete evidence. They could only swallow their fury, preparing to take revenge in the rounds to come.
What happened, happened so quickly that neither the audience nor the other teams had time to react. Even in Shrek Academy's rest area, everyone wore confused expressions.
"Heh! That girl really is ruthless," Zhu Ziyang muttered. He had seen everything, including the true cause of Shi Xing's death.
"Brother, you know how Shi Xing died?" Jiang Nannan asked curiously.
"He died from a shattered heart, which still held traces of light element. It seems Dong'er used some kind of delayed attack technique." Zhu Ziyang smiled. As someone of ultimate light, no light element could escape his perception — everything Wang Dong'er did on the field was within his grasp.
The second match began swiftly. Sun Moon Team sent out their next fighter: Zhou Xinghao. Fuelled by grief and rage from his teammate's death, he went all out from the start. Once the referee gave the signal, he deployed his soul tool turret, surrounding himself with all kinds of soul devices. A storm of soul cannon blasts rained down on Wang Dong'er.
What Zhou Xinghao didn't expect was that Wang Dong'er also possessed a soul tool — a sixth-level soul thruster. This meant his turret-based strategy was completely ineffective. Immobilized by his own setup, he became a sitting duck.
Naturally, Wang Dong'er didn't show mercy. She unleashed a barrage of techniques. Zhou Xinghao's turret was on the verge of collapse. One more hit and he'd be blown apart with it. The referee had to intervene.
Wang Dong'er was furious, but the referee stated righteously, "He no longer has the ability to fight back. As presiding referee, I declare Tang Sect the winner of this round. I have the authority to stop a match under such circumstances."
With the referee's judgment firm, Wang Dong'er had no choice but to retreat. She turned and headed toward the edge of the arena. But at that moment, Zhou Xinghao, clearly unwilling to accept defeat, launched a surprise attack.
"I haven't lost yet! Die!" he shrieked. His upper body arched back, revealing eight bright silver cannon ports on his abdomen. Eight dazzling silver beams fired toward Wang Dong'er.
No one saw this coming — not even Wang Dong'er. Despite the referee's verdict, Zhou Xinghao still attacked, and the referee didn't stop him!
"Bastard!" Ma Xiaotao leapt to her feet. Though Tang Sect and Shrek Academy were separate in name, Wang Dong'er was a core disciple of the inner court. She prepared to intervene, only to find her wrist caught by Zhu Ziyang.
She turned to him in confusion.
Zhu Ziyang shook his head. "Don't rush. Dong'er will be fine. Besides, we can't intervene here."
"...Fine!" Ma Xiaotao sat back down reluctantly, anger still burning on her face as she stared at the field.
Wang Dong'er was injured by the ambush. But Zhou Xinghao was instantly struck by a golden beam of light and exploded into a shower of flesh and bone, leaving no corpse behind.
Everything happened in a flash. When everyone came to their senses, both teams had already rushed onto the arena. Fury burned in both camps — the atmosphere was electric, and a full-on brawl seemed imminent.
If the two teams really clashed on stage, it would bring utter disgrace to the Sun Moon Empire. Fortunately, the tournament's head referee, Rank 9 Soul Engineer Zheng Zhan, appeared in time to prevent a melee.
Zheng Zhan immediately dismissed the previous referee and announced that he would personally oversee the remainder of the match. Facing a Title Douluo-level powerhouse, no matter how dissatisfied they were, both teams could only back down.
The match resumed. Sun Moon Team sent out their third fighter, and Tang Sect sent out their second — He Caitou.
Truthfully, Wang Dong'er's injuries weren't severe. Though caught off guard, thanks to Huo Yuhao's timely instructions, she only suffered three charred marks on her back — no damage to her bones or tendons. For Tang Sect, who had a healing-type Soul King, this was nothing. Still, they chose to rotate out.
Zhu Ziyang noticed the dark look on Huo Yuhao's face. It was clear that Dong'er's ambush had shaken him deeply. It seemed this junior of his was about to erupt.
Zhu Ziyang smiled and shook his head, looking every bit like a helpless father.
