Zhang Lexuan knelt solemnly before the jade stele engraved with the four characters "Silver Moon Goddess." Her eyes closed and her expression serene, she silently recited the prayer Xu Jianwei had taught her.
The three others each had different thoughts. Xu Jianwei was full of hope and tension, Jiang Nannan was mostly curious, and Zhu Ziyang's attention had shifted entirely to the massive statue of the goddess. He clearly noticed that as Zhang Lexuan began her prayer, the statue faintly radiated a golden glow.
"That's the power of faith." A voice suddenly echoed in Zhu Ziyang's mind, startling him. It was Xiao Bai—the examiner of his divine inheritance trial.
"You can see what's happening around me?" Zhu Ziyang asked in surprise.
"No," Xiao Bai denied. "I'm just sensing a strong surge of faith power coming from the Other Shore Flower mark on your forehead."
Zhu Ziyang instinctively touched his brow. The flower mark there felt faintly warm. He was puzzled. "The Other Shore Flower mark can sense faith power?"
"Not directly," Xiao Bai replied. "But it can detect the presence of another god's inheritance or divine domain."
"So this place really is the inheritance ground of a deity?" Zhu Ziyang's heart stirred. "That means the so-called Moon Trial is actually part of a divine inheritance assessment?"
"Yes," Xiao Bai affirmed. "The faith energy here is so dense, it's already manifested into a false idol. That means the god has long since fallen. Otherwise, they would never have allowed this accumulation of faith to form an idol like this. Look, the light of the inheritance is coming. I think I know which god it belongs to."
As Xiao Bai spoke, Zhang Lexuan received a response from the statue. The enormous goddess emitted radiant light. A luminous sphere of pure energy formed in her outstretched hands, casting down white light that enveloped Zhang Lexuan.
That white light quickly began to shift—from white to yellow, then to purple, and finally to black.
Xu Jianwei, who had been holding her fists tightly in anticipation, visibly relaxed. Her face lit up with joy and relief. But the transformation didn't stop there. The black light turned crimson.
The moment the red light filled the hall, everything inside took on a blood-red hue. Xu Jianwei's face was overtaken by a mix of ecstasy and reverence. She fell to her knees and prostrated herself before Zhang Lexuan. It was both an offering of worship to Zhang Lexuan and to the power now recognized within her.
Under the crimson light, Zhang Lexuan looked sacred, like a daughter of divinity.
"A Red-Level Trial?" Zhu Ziyang murmured. "Does that mean she's received a divine inheritance?"
"That depends on how many trials she's been assigned," Xiao Bai replied coldly. "Generally, a divine inheritance requires completing nine trials."
"I see." Zhu Ziyang nodded. Then he noticed that the red light enveloping Zhang Lexuan had shifted. It flowed into the jade stele, which absorbed it completely. The hall returned to normal.
A second later, a red beam shot out from the jade stele. It surged toward Zhang Lexuan but stopped just before reaching her. Then it expanded into a red screen of light, hovering in front of her.
Then more red beams followed, each transforming into a red light screen. In total, eight such screens floated before her.
Seeing them, both Zhu Ziyang and Xu Jianwei whispered in unison, "Red-Level Eight Trial!"
The eight red screens hovered briefly before flying into Zhang Lexuan's forehead. A silver osmanthus flower mark bloomed at the center of her brow, enhancing her beauty with a touch of mystique.
"O Silver Moon above, bless the rebirth of the Moon Lineage!" Xu Jianwei wept as she rushed forward, throwing her arms around Zhang Lexuan and murmuring the words like a prayer.
Zhang Lexuan's face showed her confusion. She hadn't yet processed what had just occurred. All she could do was close her eyes and let time sort through it for her.
"So, whose divine inheritance is this?" Zhu Ziyang asked silently in his heart.
"The Goddess of Moonlight," Xiao Bai replied. "A true main god who perished in the same catastrophe as the God of Death. It looks like she was completely destroyed—not even a shred of divine consciousness remains. Only her divine position lingers. But she was fortunate. With so much faith accumulated here, it's enough to eventually attract a worthy successor."
"The Goddess of Moonlight?" Zhu Ziyang was surprised. "Shouldn't it have been a Moon Goddess?"
"Hmph." Xiao Bai scoffed. Even though his tone was cold and distant, Zhu Ziyang could still hear the disdain in it.
"In the Divine Realm, the moon is actually a star. Not even a main god like the God of Death dares claim to control the moon, let alone the Goddess of Moonlight. So how could anyone call themselves a Moon God?"
"The Goddess of Moonlight drew her power from the moon's energy, and because of this, mortals often mistook her for the Moon Goddess. But in truth, there is no god in the Divine Realm who governs the moon itself."
"That's... eye-opening," Zhu Ziyang admitted. But his curiosity only grew.
"You mentioned the moon is a star? What kind of existence is that?"
"That touches on the nature of the universe and its composition. You're not ready to understand it," Xiao Bai answered bluntly.
"Once you complete the sixth Death God Trial, I'll begin teaching you about the Divine Realm. Honestly, I've already said too much today."
"That's it. I'm leaving. Don't call me again."
"You're the one who popped out in the first place…" Zhu Ziyang couldn't help but complain.
There was no reply.
Xiao Bai was gone, leaving Zhu Ziyang both frustrated and helpless.
By now, Zhang Lexuan had finished processing the contents of the Red-Level Eight Trial. Her face was full of wonder.
"I never imagined something this mystical could exist in the world."
"Xuanxuan, a Red-Level Eight Trial! Even the Yin Clan's founder and the Silver Moon Empress never received such a trial!" Xu Jianwei held Zhang Lexuan's hand tightly, overwhelmed with excitement.
"The Silver Moon Empress reached Rank 99 after receiving a Red-Level Seven Trial. You've received one trial more. Your future achievements will definitely surpass hers. Truly, the Silver Moon watches over us!"
"Let's hope so." Zhang Lexuan smiled faintly. The silver osmanthus mark on her brow made her seem even more ethereal.
"Sister Lexuan, that osmanthus mark is beautiful!" Jiang Nannan walked over, her voice full of admiration.
"It'll vanish once I complete all the trials. It's nothing to dwell on," Zhang Lexuan said with a smile, touching her brow. "Right—Nannan, why don't you try as well? We could complete the trials together!"
"Sure!" Jiang Nannan accepted happily.
"Young lady," Xu Jianwei reminded gently, "what is your martial soul? Without moon blood, you won't receive the Silver Moon's response."
"No problem! My martial soul is the Lunar Jade Rabbit," Jiang Nannan answered confidently.
"The Lunar Jade Rabbit?" Xu Jianwei was astonished. Inwardly, she couldn't help marveling at Shrek Academy's strength—they even had someone with such a rare ancient beast martial soul.
"Alright, Nannan, go ahead." Zhang Lexuan nudged her forward with a smile.
"With your talent, you might get an even higher trial than I did!"
"Hehe, then I won't hold back!" Jiang Nannan giggled, then followed Zhang Lexuan's example. She knelt before the jade stele, closed her eyes, and began praying solemnly in her heart to the moon.
Zhu Ziyang couldn't help feeling nervous. He watched her every move intently. He truly hoped Jiang Nannan could inherit the Goddess of Moonlight's divine position. Only then could she walk beside him for the rest of their lives. Otherwise, even if she reached the pinnacle of a Rank 99 Ultimate Douluo, her lifespan would barely exceed five hundred years.
He didn't want to end up alone for eternity. If that happened, what would be the point of becoming a god?
Zhu Ziyang silently made a vow to himself.
Even if Jiang Nannan couldn't obtain the Goddess of Moonlight's inheritance, he would do everything in his power to find her another divine inheritance.
That was the promise of a man.
