The seven-man Spirit Beast Hunting Team from Shrek Academy chose to go directly into the mixed zone of the Star Dou Forest, as all five members who needed spirit rings required ten-thousand-year spirit rings.
That's right — all of them needed ten-thousand-year spirit rings, including Huo Yuhao, who was just a Soul Ancestor.
Though Huo Yuhao appeared to be the weakest in terms of cultivation within the preselection team, seemingly just an average face, he had always kept a low profile. In terms of spirit ring configuration, he wasn't far behind Zhu Ziyang. His third spirit ring was a ten-thousand-year-old Purple Spirit Lynx. At the time he absorbed it, Xuanzi, who led them to hunt the beast, had been terrified.
Zhu Ziyang could only sigh — as expected of the Son of Destiny, truly extraordinary.
At night, the seven of them camped to rest.
"Tell us what kind of spirit beast you want for your spirit ring. That way we'll have a better idea what to look for," said Zhang Lexuan.
"Exactly, let us know. I can help assess your choices too," Zhu Ziyang added.
"Hehe, of course I want one related to the moon or something fast!" Jiang Nannan giggled as she leaned affectionately against Zhu Ziyang.
"Our Xu family has a complete system of spirit rings, so for my sixth ring, I need a plant-type beast called the Sky Star Vine," said Xu Jiujiu with a calm smile. At nineteen and already a Soul Emperor, she was one of the top geniuses even in talent-packed Shrek Academy. "If we can't find it in the forest, I'll just have to go home."
"Sky Star Vine?" Beibei's eyes flickered with surprise but he didn't comment. "For me, light-attribute beasts are preferred. If not that, then lightning."
Xu Sanshi followed up with a grin. "I'm easy. Any beast with strong defense is fine. I'm not picky!"
"Hmm… I want a spiritual-type ring," said Huo Yuhao quietly. Mu En's death had hit him hard. He'd become far more silent, and only joined this spirit hunt because Zhu Ziyang had forced him to.
"Alright, got it!" Zhang Lexuan nodded. "We'll rest tonight and start the search tomorrow!"
Everyone quickly entered rest mode. Per the plan, Zhu Ziyang and Zhang Lexuan took turns on night watch — Zhu Ziyang on the first half, Zhang Lexuan the second.
Time passed slowly. When midnight approached, Zhang Lexuan came out of her tent and walked up to Zhu Ziyang.
"Ziyang, your shift's over. Go rest, it's my turn."
"Sister Lexuan, you didn't sleep at all?" Zhu Ziyang looked at her slightly tired face and asked with concern.
"I couldn't sleep," she said with a helpless smile.
"You're still thinking about Elder Mu, aren't you?" Zhu Ziyang saw through her thoughts instantly. "You really don't have to dwell like this. If teacher knew, he certainly wouldn't want us exhausting ourselves with grief and wasting his hopes for us."
"Heh… that really does sound like something Elder Mu would say," Zhang Lexuan smiled softly.
Suddenly, a rustling sound came from the darkness not far away, making both of them alert. Their eyes instantly locked on the source of the noise.
"Ziyang, be careful!" Zhang Lexuan warned. She raised her hand and launched a beam of moonlight straight toward the disturbance.
From the shadows, a black figure bolted toward them.
Zhu Ziyang raised the Stillness Fate Ending Scythe and charged without hesitation, the blade slashing toward the black figure.
The creature was agile. With a twist of its body, it dodged the blade and leaped to a clearing a few meters away, revealing its true form.
It was a small beast covered in jet-black fur. It resembled a tiger but was much smaller. Its forelimbs resembled those of a horse, and its amber eyes glowed with cleverness. Sleek and stealthy, it blended seamlessly into the night. Without the moonlight, they might not have noticed it at all.
"It's a Nightshadow Beast!" Zhu Ziyang instantly recognized it and smiled. "Looks like it just crossed into the ten-thousand-year level — perfect for Yuhao's fourth spirit ring."
"Good, Ziyang, guard the perimeter and don't let it escape," said Zhang Lexuan. "Leave it to me!"
As she spoke, a silver moon rose behind her. Eight spirit rings circled her body. Her fourth ring glowed rapidly, and a gentle yet irresistible beam of moonlight descended toward the beast.
The Nightshadow Beast was a dark-element spirit beast with high intelligence and spiritual power. It instinctively loathed moonlight and tried to dodge.
Although Zhang Lexuan's fourth ring had a lock-on effect, it wasn't fast. The Nightshadow Beast's small size and agility let it evade easily.
But she hadn't pinned her hopes on just that skill.
As the beast dodged the first wave, her third spirit ring glowed. The silver moon behind her flared brightly, and a barrage of silvery rays rained down like a monsoon, flooding every corner of the beast's escape range.
Trapped, the Nightshadow Beast shrieked miserably, curling its body to minimize the damage.
The battle was over. Zhang Lexuan's third ring skill, Moon Rain, was an area attack that could release at least twenty-seven beams of moonlight in one second. Each beam had a lunar marking effect.
"So beautiful…" The commotion woke the others. Jiang Nannan, Xu Jiujiu, Beibei, Xu Sanshi, and Huo Yuhao stepped out of their tents — all stunned by the shimmering moonlight display.
"Brother, what kind of beast is it?" Jiang Nannan asked Zhu Ziyang.
"A ten-thousand-year Nightshadow Beast — just right for Yuhao's fourth ring."
"Nightshadow Beast? What kind of beast is that?" Huo Yuhao asked curiously.
"Dark and spiritual element. It can merge with darkness and create a field that disrupts opponents' mental focus," Beibei explained. "It's perfect for your control-type path."
"Really?" Huo Yuhao's eyes lit up. If it provided a field-type control ability, that would be an incredible boost.
Zhang Lexuan walked over with the weakened beast and tossed it onto the ground.
"Yuhao, finish it and absorb the ring. The rest of you, back to sleep — still a while before dawn."
"Okay!" Huo Yuhao got to work.
The others returned to their tents.
Zhu Ziyang didn't leave. He was curious to see what kind of skill this Nightshadow Beast would grant. If it was just a basic disruption field, it would be far too boring. As the Son of Destiny, Yuhao's skill should be more special!
"Ziyang, not going to rest?" Zhang Lexuan asked.
"I'll keep watch with you. Besides, I want to see Yuhao's new skill."
"A-Alright!" Zhang Lexuan blushed slightly at his first sentence, her mind going elsewhere.
Zhu Ziyang had meant the second part, but how others interpreted the first wasn't something he could control.
Huo Yuhao's absorption went smoothly. In half an hour, it was complete.
His fourth spirit skill was called Eternal Soul Night — a single-target control skill. Any opponent whose spiritual power was lower than Yuhao's would have their soul dragged into endless night, suffering both darkness and silence for three seconds before release.
Well… Zhu Ziyang could only say it was expected.
For a control-type Soul Master, Eternal Soul Night was an extremely powerful tool. It ignored all stats — if the target's mental power was weaker than Yuhao's, it would be impossible to resist.
To gain such a skill from just the fourth ring… as expected, the Son of Destiny truly was extraordinary!
