Chapter 4: Echoes of Betrayal

The air in Greyhaven was thick with tension. Word had spread like wildfire—Council scouts prowled the forests, their presence a looming threat. The villagers, though simple folk, prepared quietly for the possibility of violence, securing homes and sharpening tools.

Inside Harren's home, Elias, Isabella, and Sister Maren convened by the flickering hearth. The ancient manuscript lay open between them, its cryptic symbols casting eerie shadows on their faces.

"We must decode the prophecy," Harren urged. "If the Council seeks to control the Bloodline's power, we need to understand it first."

Isabella's gaze was distant, troubled. "But how do we trust anyone? After Valenwood's fall, enemies could wear any mask—even those closest to us."

Elias felt the weight of her words. Trust had become a fragile commodity. He recalled the friendly faces at the Council meeting—the whispered conversations, the lingering glances. Was there a traitor among those he once called allies?

As night deepened, a knock came at the door. A messenger, breathless and cloaked in dirt, handed Harren a sealed letter—an invitation, or perhaps a trap.

"The Council summons you to the capital," Harren read aloud, eyes narrowing. "Under the pretense of peace talks."

Isabella's voice trembled. "It's a ploy. They want to divide us, to root out dissent."

Elias stood, resolve hardening. "Then we go—but on our terms. We expose their lies and reclaim what is ours."

The next morning, under a gray sky heavy with rain, Elias and his companions set out toward the capital. Every step was shadowed by uncertainty; every face they passed might conceal a dagger.

But as they crossed the border of Greyhaven, a sudden ambush erupted—arrows whistled through the air, and masked assailants descended from the trees.

In the chaos, betrayal revealed itself—one among their trusted allies turned against them, tipping the scales in the Council's favor.

Wounded but unbroken, Elias vowed silently: the game had changed, but the fight was far from over.
