Chapter 3 - They were good people.

Mina and Max had started walking. It had been a day since Mina formed a contract with Max. They were walking together towards the site where Mina's teammates died. Mina was cautious so it took them longer than expected.

Mina turned around and saw Max walking behind her, playing with a stick like it was a sword. Naked. Again.

"Where's the blanket?" Mina asked.

"I threw it. It was uncomfortable. It smelt like burnt metal and sadness."

Mina sighed and continued walking. After walking with a beast who could scare away 7-Star monsters and had no shame nor privacy, Mina had gotten used to it. She no longer cared. If anyone spotted them by chance, she would just say that he's a wild Beast-folk and knock them out cold before they could ask questions.

After walking for another few hours, they reached the site. There was blood everywhere. But no bodies. The monsters had taken care of them. To be exact, they had eaten them whole. Though, the trucks and other vehicles were there, even though they could no longer work.

Mina walked and looked for their belongings. A half glove, a dog tag, a photo, a helmet, all she could find. She buried all of them.

Max finally talked. "They were good people."

"They were." Mina replied. "But how do you know?"

"I heard it. They were yelling and asking you to run. I can hear things from far away."

"Neat."

"Right?" Max said with a grin.

Mina walked to one of the supply trucks and took out some clothes that would fit Max. She tossed him the clothes and said, "Put them on. They shouldn't be uncomfortable."

Max tried. Failed. He pulled the pants wrong. Tail trapped. Flipped them. Tried again. Then he put on the shirt. Failed again. It was backwards. Mina helped him. She also found some shoes and gave it to him. "Here."

"Nope."

"What?"

"Don't wanna."

"Wear them. They're not itchy."

"Really? Promise?"

"What are you, a kid?" Mina asked, genuinely frustrated.

"Maybe." He grinned. But he wore the shoes anyway.

They camped a little father from there at night. Far away to feel safe but close away for Mina to see everything.

Max sat beside her, poking the fire with a stick again.

"Do you want to talk about them?" Max asked.

"No."

"Okay."

Silence. Then-

"Do you want me to name your swords?"

"No."

"Okay, what about the gun?"

"No."

Max pouted and laid beside her. She let him sleep close to her even though she said she wouldn't back then. Because she needed company right now. And Max was the only one who could give it to her.
