Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: The Council’s Shadow

The Royal Magic Academy was abuzz with the news of Kertia's expedition into the ancient tunnels. Whispers spread through the halls like wildfire — some filled with awe, others with fear and suspicion.

Despite the recent victories, not everyone welcomed the rising power of the Guardian's reincarnation. Deep within the council chambers, veiled conversations hinted at darker plots.

Archmage Veloran sat at the head of a long oak table, his face shadowed beneath his hood. Around him, several high-ranking mages exchanged glances.

"We cannot allow this necromancer to eclipse the traditions we've upheld for centuries," Veloran said quietly. "His powers, his influence — they threaten the balance of power within the kingdoms."

A stern mage, Lady Morwen, nodded. "The people fear what they do not understand. Necromancy is a slippery slope. If he loses control, it could bring disaster."

Another mage, Sir Dalen, scowled. "Yet he is our best hope against the encroaching darkness. We need him... but we must also control him."

Elsewhere, Kertia felt the growing tension. His relationship with the council was fragile — respect intertwined with mistrust.

During a private meeting with Principal Mereda, she warned him, "Power alone will not save us, Kertia. You must also navigate the politics that threaten to tear us apart."

Kertia's jaw tightened. "I am ready for the fight — on all fronts."

Meanwhile, strange occurrences plagued the academy. Shadows flickered unnaturally, forbidden spells were attempted in secret, and mysterious figures slipped through corridors unseen.

One night, Arielle confronted Kertia, breathless and alarmed.

"There are whispers of a traitor in our midst," she said. "Someone is sabotaging the Vanguard from within."

Kertia's mind raced. To fight the darkness outside, he must first uncover the shadows inside.

He gathered his closest allies — Arielle, Tomas, and Liora — to strategize.

They began watching, listening, and gathering information, slowly piecing together a web of deception.

As the days passed, Kertia realized that the battle was no longer just against undead and dark gods.

It was a war of trust and betrayal, where friends could become foes, and secrets might be deadlier than any magic.

Determined, Kertia vowed, "I will protect this academy, these kingdoms — even if I must face the darkness within myself."
