Chapter 207 - Pacific Rim

Pacific Rim world, Earth.

Sydney, Australia.

Outside the hundred-meter-tall concrete perimeter wall, a fierce battle was raging.

A battle between a Jaeger and a Kaiju.

"Echo Saber"

A fourth-generation Jaeger from Japan.

His opponent was a Category 4 Kaiju, codenamed "Virus," ninety meters tall and weighing 2630 tons.

The roar of mechanical gears and the bellowing of the giant Kaiju intertwined, echoing throughout the shallow waters near Sydney.

Even the city behind the wall could hear it clearly.

The residents in the city, however, had various expressions.

Some believed that an experienced fourth-generation Jaeger was sufficient to deal with one Kaiju, so there was no need to worry.

Others thought that even if the Jaeger was defeated, the anti-Kaiju wall, which the government had spent a great deal of manpower and resources building, would be enough to keep the Kaiju out.

Only a small number of people, in a panic, hid in the underground shelters within the city, hoping that this sudden disaster would pass quickly, and hoping that they would still see the sun tomorrow.

"Calm down, son, we need to get the system up and running as soon as possible."

The most conspicuous sight in Sydney's urban area was the only fifth-generation Jaeger, the Eureka Striker, standing 76 meters tall and weighing 1850 tons, also known as the strongest Jaeger.

Inside the cockpit, the Hansen father and son were urgently adjusting the Jaeger's system programs, which had just resumed operation.

As father and son, and pilots of the same Jaeger, Old Hansen could clearly sense his son's current anxious mood.

"Fuck! Those damn Kaiju! To attack at this very moment!"

The short-tempered Hansen couldn't help but curse.

Both the Eureka Striker and Crimson Typhoon were originally in a system-shutdown state, about to be transferred to the Hong Kong base.

Only the Echo Saber, which had just been transported from Japan, was in a combat-ready state and had to hastily meet the enemy.

According to the footage from the rear base, the battle situation outside the anti-Kaiju wall was not optimistic.

"Oh my god! Echo Saber!"

Chaotic shouts of terror came through the communication system.

The Hansen father and son immediately looked at the screen in unison, only to see the previously agile Echo Saber suddenly caught off guard by Virus. The difference in size and strength made it impossible for the former to move.

In an instant, one of Virus's giant claws tore through Echo Saber's head, and both pilots were immediately engulfed in flames.

The Hansen father and son looked solemn and immediately sped up their actions to restart the Eureka Striker's system.

"These damn technicians, why do they make the Jaeger's system so complicated?"

Hansen's hands never stopped, but no matter how fast he moved, it would still take at least an hour for the Eureka Striker to fully regain combat capability, according to their estimates.

"This is Crimson Typhoon. Our system is combat-ready. Deploying now!"

Such a voice rang out in the communication channel.

At the same time, the Crimson Typhoon, a slightly smaller Australian third-generation Jaeger that had been standing next to the Eureka Striker, suddenly took a step and rushed towards the anti-Kaiju wall.

Old Hansen grabbed the communicator in front of him, wanting to stop Crimson Typhoon's solo action.

"This is Eureka Striker. Crimson Typhoon, stop immediately! Echo Saber has been defeated. You, a single Jaeger, cannot be a match for Virus!"

The only response he received was a firm answer.

"We will buy time for the Eureka Striker's system to restart! If there's no obstruction, Virus will soon break through the anti-Kaiju wall.

At that time, the residents in the city will suffer heavy casualties."

The reason was ample, but also cruel.

Even a fourth-generation Jaeger like Echo Saber had been defeated by Virus. As a third-generation Jaeger, Crimson Typhoon could hardly stop Virus for very long.

"Fuck!"

This time, even the usually calm Old Hansen couldn't help but curse, joining his son in berating the technicians who had designed the Jaeger's system restart to be so troublesome.

Just as they had expected, Crimson Typhoon, which had rushed out beyond the anti-Kaiju wall, only delayed Virus for a little over ten minutes before its cockpit was blown apart.

Only one pilot managed to parachute to safety.

And Virus, having defeated two Jaegers in a row, raised its head and let out a triumphant roar to the sky.

Then it began to use its incredibly thick head to ram the anti-Kaiju wall in front of it.

"Thud! Thud!! Thud!!!"

Each of Virus's impacts produced an earth-shattering sound.

And the force of the impacts was intensifying. Countless concrete fragments flew everywhere, and the anti-Kaiju wall was being destroyed at an alarming rate.

Even with the missile launchers already built on parts of the wall firing fiercely, they still couldn't stop Virus in the slightest.

"Run!"

"That damn wall can't stop the Kaiju!"

Only then did most of the residents in the city react, rushing in terror into the nearest underground shelter facilities.

And even then, the Eureka Striker, as a fifth-generation Jaeger with the most complex system, was still in a restarting state and had not yet regained combat capability.

To the horror of everyone, in just over half an hour, Virus had forcefully smashed through the nearly hundred-meter-high, tens-of-meters-thick anti-Kaiju wall, carrying countless concrete fragments and dust, and surged into the city.

"Roar!!!"

Virus let out another triumphant roar and immediately began to destroy everything around it.

Whether it was high-rise buildings, green plants, or the tiny, ant-like humans on the ground, all were on its destruction list.

"Alright! System restart complete! Eureka Striker, deploy!!!"

Finally, after Virus had collapsed a building tens of meters tall, the Eureka Striker finally completed its system restart and regained combat capability.

After sending a message to the rear base, the Hansen father and son immediately entered a neural link state, sharing the immense pressure required to pilot the Jaeger.

Immediately after, the Eureka Striker took a step and quickly rushed towards Virus, which was not far away.

The ground along its path trembled constantly under its heavy footsteps.

"Click-clack, click-clack."

Before even reaching Virus, the Eureka Striker opened its six super cannons located in its chest, preparing to unleash terrifying long-range firepower upon it.

However, before the Eureka Striker could fire its cannons,

The huge commotion in the sky and the chaotic noise in the communication channel interrupted the Hansen father and son's actions.

Even Virus stopped its destructive actions and looked up at the sky.

An object resembling a meteor, burning with light and heat, was rapidly falling towards the battlefield.

"Boom!!!"

After emitting a massive sound, the object landed, creating a huge deep crater while kicking up a vast amount of dust.

"Alert!"

Although they didn't know what had happened, the experienced the Hansens immediately heightened their vigilance.

They didn't think this would be a Jaeger's entrance. However, they had never seen a Kaiju fall from the sky either; these Kaiju were supposed to emerge from the wormhole at the bottom of the ocean.

As the dust slowly dispersed, the Hansen father and son, and everyone in Sydney's urban area, finally saw the object's appearance.

A giant, strangely shaped Colossus, nearly sixty meters tall, stood on the ground with four slender limbs.

"Purifier Colossus activated. Initiating purification protocol."

The Purifier's AI emitted a chilling sound through the broadcast system.

Immediately, the two giant thermal ray cannons on its sides spewed dazzling, scorching Plasma beams, striking the Virus in front of it.

The giant war machine from the Protoss clashed with the giant bio-weapon created by the Precursors.

Countless wisps of white steam rose from the Virus's body.

With just one attack, the thermal rays left two terrifying, charred wounds on the Virus's tough body.

Even the flowing blue blood, which contained deadly toxins, was completely evaporated by the still-burning wounds.

"Roar!"

In pain, the Virus let out a mournful roar.

But its instinct as a monster immediately allowed the Virus to recover, and it roared as it charged towards the Purifier Colossus, which was only a short distance away.

"What are you waiting for! Attack!"

Inside the Eureka Striker's cockpit, Old Hansen, who had reacted, immediately said.

"Attack who?"

Hansen was still a little confused.

"Whoever is fighting the monster, we help them!"

As soon as he finished speaking, the Eureka Striker's six giant cannons on its chest began to spew out ultra-large caliber shells.

Accompanied by deafening roars, all the shells accurately struck the Virus's body.

Even after suffering such severe attacks, the Virus did not stop, but continued to ferociously charge towards the Purifier Colossus.

Everyone watched this scene with bated breath.

They didn't think that strange-looking mech had any close-combat capabilities.

Seeing that the situation was not right, the Hansens immediately rushed towards the Virus at high speed, trying to stop it.

No matter where that strange mech that fell from the sky came from, at least the Hansens didn't want to lose the support they had finally gained.

What surprised everyone was that the pilot in the strange mech not only did not perform any evasive maneuvers.

Instead, he plunged his four long, slender legs deep into the ground, anchoring himself, as if preparing to withstand the impact head-on.

At the same time, the two giant thermal ray cannons continued to bombard the Virus's body, constantly leaving terrifying scorch marks on it. Even the Hansens, located in the mech's cockpit, could smell a foul, burning odor.

"Damn it! It's too late!"

Even though the Eureka Striker's chest cannons were still continuously firing, the Virus, relying on its tough body, endured a large amount of damage.

It charged to the front of the Purifier Colossus.

"Roar!"

With a furious roar, the Virus simultaneously swung its left and right giant claws, grabbing at the Purifier Colossus in front of it.

"Thud!"

A dull sound came, and a glowing Plasma shield suddenly appeared, blocking between the Colossus and the Virus.

The latter's heavy blow, with its giant claws wrapped in howling wind, was enough to severely wound a Mark III or even Mark IV Jaeger with a single claw.

However, the Plasma shield erected by the Colossus only rippled slightly.

"What is that!? An energy shield!?"

The Hansens in the Eureka Striker were extremely surprised. Not only them, but the technical personnel in the base also exclaimed in disbelief.

With humanity's current technological level, it was impossible to develop advanced technology like energy shields.

Let alone install it on such a huge war mech.

When one attack failed, the Virus seemed to be enraged, its giant claws still continuously swinging, but ultimately it was in vain.

No matter how many times it attacked, the Colossus remained standing firmly on the ground, without the slightest movement.

Instead, the Virus's body was constantly accumulating hideous wounds scorched by the thermal rays.

"Grab him!"

The Eureka Striker finally rushed behind the Virus, extending its palms to clamp the Virus's massive head.

At the same time, the metal blades at its joints also began to cut into the Virus's skin.

The captured Virus was unable to move for a while, only able to let out painful roars while struggling.

"Use the taser!"

"Already activated!"

Saying that, the Eureka Striker's palms released, then immediately clenched into fists, slamming them onto both sides of the Virus's head.

The Eureka Striker's fists were both equipped with ultra-high-power tasers. The power of the taser on each finger was enough to electrocute a dozen, or even dozens, of elephants.

But even with the tasers on all ten fingers operating at full power, it could only cause a certain stunning effect on the Virus.

However, in a perilous battle, this brief stun was already enough.

Taking this opportunity, the Purifier Colossus's two thermal ray cannons began to charge and power up.

Three seconds later, a charged thermal ray, considerably thicker than a normal thermal ray, shot out, accurately hitting the rows of eyeballs on the Virus's head.

"!"

The Virus immediately let out an ear-splitting scream of pain.

Even its struggling movements significantly lessened.

"Good opportunity!"

The Hansens were about to deploy the retractable blades on the Eureka Striker's arms to deliver the final fatal blow to the Virus.

However, they then discovered that the Virus's body had already gone limp and fallen to the ground.

The Purifier Colossus's thermal ray had directly pierced through the Virus's brain, boiling and even evaporating a large amount of brain matter within it.

This might be the first monster whose brain matter was cooked.

"We finally won."

Seeing the battle end, Hansen in the Eureka Striker breathed a sigh of relief. Thanks to this unidentified mech that fell from the sky, the Level 4 Virus did not cause too much damage to Sydney city.

"Don't let your guard down."

Old Hansen said in a deep voice.

"We still don't know if the other party is friend or foe, or even if there are humans inside."

"But we just now—"

"Just now was just now. Now, deploy the blades and stay vigilant."

Old Hansen reprimanded his son's naive idea.

Sure enough, the voice of General Stacker, the Commander of the Jaeger unit, immediately came through the communication channel.

"Eureka Striker, stay vigilant, always pay attention to that mech's movements! The base has already dispatched Crimson Typhoon to support Sydney!"

"Understood!"

Unlike the slightly nervous Hansens and the Jaeger unit's personnel.

The civilians in Sydney city felt the end of the war. After cautiously peeking out from their underground shelters and discovering that the Virus had been defeated, they all poured out of the shelters and began to cheer joyfully.

And everyone noticed the Purifier Colossus, which was subtly confronting the Eureka Striker.

Through live broadcast, most people knew.

It was this strange mech that, almost single-handedly, killed the arrogant Virus, which had defeated two Jaegers in a row.

Was this strange mech, calling itself "Purifier Colossus," friend or foe?

This was a question everyone cared about.

Under everyone's gaze, the Purifier Colossus received a command, then suddenly began to move.

The thermal ray cannons restarted, and under the wary eyes of the nearby Eureka Striker, it began to cut up the Virus's massive corpse on the ground.

The scorching thermal rays could effectively seal the cuts, preventing the highly toxic blue blood from flowing out of the corpse.

Soon, giant chunks of the corpse were cut up and stacked together, like packaged meals.

"What is this mech doing?"

Under everyone's puzzled gazes, a dense cluster of small firelights once again appeared in the sky above, falling towards the ground.

Those were numerous small landing craft breaking through the atmosphere, packed with Tyrants, Pursuers, and fully armed Universal Union soldiers.

As soon as the ships, whose technology far surpassed that of Earth in the Pacific Rim world, revealed themselves, everyone was stunned.

And when large numbers of Tyrants, Pursuers, and soldiers stepped out of the ships, those who witnessed it all felt numb.

"Quick, quick, quick! Our mission is to collect these corpses! Don't let them rot before they're on the research table!"

The Commander in charge of this monster corpse recovery operation immediately began directing the scene.

Numerous engineering vehicles drove out of the ships, working with the powerful Tyrants and Pursuers to move giant corpse fragments, transferring them onto the ships.

"General, what about us?"

The Hansens, who had witnessed all of this, immediately asked their superior about how to handle the situation.

After a moment of silence, Stacker replied: "Do not interfere with their actions."

"We're just going to watch these unknown guys dismantle monster corpses in Sydney?"

"Do as I say."

With that, Stacker hung up the communication. He had received urgent calls from various sponsor countries.

Global Emergency Meeting

On the huge screen in front of Stacker, more than a dozen faces of heads of state from various countries appeared. England, France, Russia, Japan, America, Australia—A series of major financial contributors from the Pacific Rim region, who had provided substantial funding for the Jaeger program, were all present.

Stacker had never seen an emergency call of this level before.

"Gentlemen and ladies, we are currently handling the monster attack in Sydney. I presume you are here about that strange Jaeger and those ships?" Stacker instantly guessed why these countries had gone to such lengths to contact him, a discarded Commander of the Jaeger program.

"That is one of the reasons, General Stacker." The US head of state spoke. "The situation is urgent; you need to see this."

As he finished speaking, a clear image appeared on the screen. The image showed a silver-white, ring-shaped device.

"This is footage taken by an orbital space station half an hour ago. That thing suddenly appeared between Earth and Mars. Measurements show that its diameter is at least one hundred kilometers." The French head of state added: "Along with it, several large ships also appeared. Furthermore, ships are continuously emerging from that ring. One ship has already entered Earth's orbit and deployed the Jaeger and troops you saw in Sydney."

"Is that a portal!?" General Stacker was somewhat shocked.

"We thought so too. The only thing on Earth that could be related to a portal is that wormhole deep in the Pacific. You Jaeger pilots have been monitoring that wormhole's situation. We need that monitoring data." The Russian representative, always straightforward, directly stated the purpose of their communication.

Given the gravity of the situation, Stacker did not hesitate. He immediately called the team responsible for monitoring the wormhole in the deep Pacific. He sent all the data to the relevant agencies of these countries.

"Currently, we have not received any messages from those ships. The only targets we can contact are the landing forces in Sydney." The US representative made a new request, or rather, a demand, to Stacker. "We need the Jaeger forces present in Sydney to immediately make contact with those people. It is imperative to gather more intelligence before they leave."

Stacker agreed almost without hesitation.

But at the same time, he also put forward his own condition. "I need you to guarantee subsequent funding for the Jaeger program."

Originally, these politicians and heads of state were the ones who had abandoned the Jaeger program and switched to the Anti-Kaiju Wall program. But now, faced with Stacker's opportunistic demand, they could only agree.

In fact, Sydney also had government departments and conventional armed forces. However, Stacker's Jaegers were closest to the landing forces, and time was of the essence, which is why the heads of state quickly sought out Stacker. Under their watchful eyes, Stacker immediately pulled out his communicator and contacted Hansen in the Eureka Striker, giving them his latest orders.

"Contact these guys? How do we contact them? We don't even know where they came from!" Young Hansen complained slightly, but still disconnected from the Jaeger's controls with Old Hansen.

He then climbed out of the cockpit and slowly descended the ladder on the side of the Jaeger.

Standing on the ground, Hansen exchanged a glance and walked towards the Universal Union soldiers who were dealing with the Venom's corpse not far away.

Along the way, several Tyrants carrying huge corpse fragments walked past them with heavy steps. Their tall stature and grayish-white faces sent shivers down the spines of Hansens, who were Jaeger pilots themselves.

Continuing forward, the Hansen father and son quickly found two officers who were directing the scene and handling the Venom's corpse: Isaac and Barney .

"Uh, hello. We are the pilots of the Eureka Striker, the Jaeger pilots who just fought alongside your Jaeger to defeat this monster." Old Hansen deliberated for a moment before speaking first.

Isaac stopped his work and looked Hansen father and son up and down.

Barney Calhoun rubbed the back of his neck, surveying the towering carcass. "Nice to know we've traded giant alien bugs for giant alien lizards. At least these things are easier to keep track of than a headcrab."

Isaac then opened his communicator and contacted the ship in Earth's orbit.

"This is the corpse recovery team. Special targets detected. Requesting instructions."

"Permission to engage. Handle as a Class One contact situation."

"Received."

After receiving the message from the ship's command, Isaac clapped his hands, signaling the surrounding Tyrants to disperse.

"Hello, pilots of the Eureka Striker." Isaac showed a slight smile. "My name is Isaac. I am from the Universal Union and am responsible for recovering the corpses of the Precursor bio-weapons."

"Universal Union, Precursors, bio-weapons."

These three terms immediately caught the attention of the Hansens, as well as General Stacker and the group of national politicians listening in via the communicator.

"Have them elaborate." Hansen heard General Stacker's voice.

Looking at Isaac, who had a slightly friendly smile, young Hansen directly asked: "Who are you? Where are you from? Why are you on Earth? And what do you mean by 'Precursor bio-weapons'?"

A series of critical questions were thrown out.

Isaac didn't mind young Hansen's slight disrespect and responded clearly: "I told you, we are the Universal Union. As for where we're from, that's a complex question."

Isaac pointed to himself and Barney next to him and said: "I am from the Ishimura, and he"—gesturing to Barney—"is from an alternate Earth. Some others are from Earth, but not your Earth, of course."

At this point, Isaac paused, then pointed to the huge corpse fragment next to him and said: "We are here for these Precursor bio-weapons, at least for now."

"What are Precursors? And why do you call the monsters bio-weapons?" Young Hansen repeated his previous questions.

"Precursors is the Universal Union's name for the alien civilization invading your Earth." Isaac said casually. "What you call monsters are bio-weapons cloned by the Precursors."
