"Break the law, but keep your promises! That's the pirate's code."
—Great Pirate Lynch Palmas—
My name is Roach. Full name: Roach Palmas!
What does "Roach" mean, you ask? It's the name of the most common fish caught in the southern seas.
Who gave me such a ridiculous name? The innkeeper at the harbor.
My mother was a prostitute who worked out of the second floor of that inn.
Still, when she was alive, I never went hungry. But after she passed away two years ago, I had to survive by digging through the reeking trash bins of the port and begging for scraps.
Before she died, my mother told me about my father. She said he was Lynch Palmas—the infamous pirate captain they call the Great Pirate.
If that claim had come from a potbellied lord or a noble in fine silks, I might've believed it—maybe one percent. But coming from a prostitute? I didn't buy it.
Besides, pirates were the kind who left a trail of bastards at every port they docked at. For all I know, Lynch Palmas might have over a hundred kids.
That day too, I was rummaging through the harbor trash... when I got kidnapped.
