Chapter 1 - SURREAL

Chang Globals Hospital…..

Winter was drawing near in Country D, the streets were less busy, everyone was rushing to their houses , not wanting to be cut up in traffic.

Same can't be said for Ava though, office hours ended two hours ago, she wasn't meant to take the night shift, but she had choose to stay in late.

She had been doing that quite often these days, probably trying to distract herself after what happed recently with Kai, her ex fiancée . Just like every bad romance movie ever created, she was robbed of her happy ending and you could say it left her in a pretty bad place.

It's been three months now but sometimes the pain feels worse than the day it happened, work has been helping her cope, taking late night shifts and filling up her free time with extra work. She could ask the junior staff to do them but Ava could really use the distraction.

After going through her schedule one last time, she glanced at the clock on the wall, it was almost 8pm. She could hear the sound of her tummy grumbling but she ignored it, she had been doing that a lot lately, another bad habit she had developed after the break up.

Ava closed her lap top and got up from her chair, she grabbed her black coat and her bag from the table.

"Tessmucker?" Ava called out to her assistant as she turned off the lights and walked out, but she then soon realized that Miss tessmucker had left early, something about not wanting to be late for her date.

"And here I thought you wanted to spend the night in the hospital" a deep voice echoed from across the hall.

Ava had a knowing smile on her lips as she turned to look at the chatty young fellow who was waiting by the elevator. Roy was among the few people she talked to at the hospital, she had only been working here for a year now and Roy had made her feel welcomed right from the first day she walked in. At first she thought he was too chatty and more of a nuisance but with time she understood that that was his own way of socializing.

"You didn't have to wait up for me" Ava spoke as she walked towards the pretty blonde who was keeping the elevator doors open for her. 'What a gentleman'

"I wasn't waiting for you, don't flatter yourself" Roy spoke while he grabbed her bag.

Ava didn't protest, she had gotten used to getting this treatment from him. She wondered if he was like this with everyone else or was it just her. Either way, it was nice having him around, even though he can be a headache sometimes.

"Why did you stay in late?" Roy asked with a little concern in his tone that he couldn't manage to hide really well.

"I had some work to finish" Ava lied, well it was a white lie considering the fact that she was indeed working but Ava was a Senior staff at the hospital and she could have asked one of the Junior staffs to do the work, or her assistant but she chose to do it herself.

"And I'm guessing you didn't order in?" Roy asked when they got to the parking lot.

"How about we go get some Chinese food?" He asked like the gentleman that he was but a part of him already knew what her answer would be.

"Maybe some other time Roy, I have to go home and rest, I have a busy day tomorrow" Ava lied with a straight face. She leaned in and placed a kiss on his cheek before grabbing her bag and boarding her car.

She noticed the disappointed look on Roy's face as he gave a simple nod, she just couldn't go out with him, not tonight.

It took an hour before Ava arrived at her Condo, traffic was a bitch, well she had no one else to blame but herself for working late. She parked her car in her garage and walked to her front door, all the while maintaining her composure, she could feel her emotions rising again but she tried her best to keep it in check this time.

She punched in her code and walked inside her humble abode, her Condo was pretty spacious, it had two bed rooms and another vacant room. The house looked exactly like how she left it this morning, cold and empty, she had gotten use to coming home to him for the past eight months now and so it all felt strange being alone in this house.

She took her heels off as she made way to her kitchen, she poured herself a cup of coffee and took a sip before walking into her bedroom.

Empty.

It all felt surreal to her, after taking a couple sips, she dropped the mug down and began taking off her clothes piece by piece, it didn't take a while before she made her way to the bathroom and prepared a warm bath.

But even that was not enough to ease the pain she felt inside, she took a quick bath and slipped into something comfy. By the time she finished all that, it was already past her bedtime and so she grabbed her covers and hugged her pillow with a tear rolling down her cheek.
