Chapter 36 - Chapter 36 Residual Vector Power (3)

The sputtering engine noise beneath Fitran's palm quieted significantly. Power's heavy boots echoed down the empty corridor as she stormed away, muttering loudly to herself about buttered toast, bloody vengeance, and how the new guy's eyes were entirely the wrong color.

Standing quietly in the silence of the room, Makima finally let out a slow breath. She looked down at the fading audit screen, then met Fitran's eyes. "You didn't register her," she remarked.

"The contract rejected it anyway," Fitran replied, lifting his hand from the table as the seam closed to a microscopic thread. "And I have no desire to dig this hole any deeper."

The projection dimmed to a faint haze, but it did not disappear entirely. Directly beneath Power's archived name, a single glowing line remained, pulsing in steady rhythm with a distant, mechanical heartbeat:

[UNRESOLVED: POCHITA — STILL SEARCHING]

***

The mechanical idle under Fitran's palm had settled into a thin, sputtering rattle by the time they reached the stairwell.

Makima walked half a step ahead, her dark coat buttoned tight against the draft, her expression completely unreadable. Above them, the flickering fluorescent tubes hummed with a low, nervous buzz. Somewhere far below, Power's shrill voice was already fading into the concrete stairwell, still loudly railing against missing toast and bloody vengeance.

Pulling his wounded left arm tight against his ribs, Fitran braced himself against the wall. The spatial seam had narrowed once Power vacated the room, but the residual connection hadn't gone quiet, it had merely shifted its vector.

An unsolicited system panel flashed into the edge of his vision:

[UNRESOLVED CONTRACT: POCHITA — SEARCH VECTOR UPDATED]

[Primary breadcrumb: POWER (Blood Devil / fiend) — distance increasing]

[Secondary signatures in range: 0 strong Denji linked]

[Seam stress: moderate → declining]

"She's pulling it," Fitran murmured, adjusting his balance on the landing.

"Good. Let her," Makima replied, her heels clicking softly on the concrete steps without slowing her pace. "The farther that particular claim travels from this building, the less pressure sits on your anchor."

They turned the corner of the staircase. Guarding the foot of the next flight stood a Public Safety fiend tall, gray skinned, with wide, glassy eyes and a contract brand scorched into the side of its throat. It possessed no personal history with the erased boy.

Fitran felt the residual thread sweep lazily over the fiend before sliding off, completely uninterested. The system panel updated with cold precision:

[Scan: no usable vector. Ignored.]

The fiend offered them a dull, indifferent glance before staring back at the wall. No engine sound flared.

Noticing the total lack of feedback, Makima remarked, "That one never crossed paths with the boy. Your leftover contract considers it useless."

"It only cares about living routes," Fitran explained, steadying his wrist against his side. "Power still counts as one. Most of the others won't even register."

Reaching the ground floor, they pushed through the heavy reinforced doors and stepped out into the night air, thick with the smell of wet asphalt, fresh rain, and city exhaust. Fitran paused under the concrete overhang to gauge the spatial tension. The metallic sputtering had dropped to a faint, hollow rattle. The residual's focus was stretching thin along the trail Power had blazed through the streets, hunting blood scent and lingering claims rather than tearing open the local aperture.

Then another presence crossed into the outer edge of the anchor radius.

It wasn't Power. This presence was heavier, older, and distinctly cautious. The engine idle spiked instantly a sharp, grinding rasp like a starter motor trying to catch before dying out again.

A second interface window snapped open over the first:

[New signature detected]

[Classification: Devil — high tier]

[Denji link: indirect / historical only]

[Reaction: cautious probe — no breadcrumb accepted]

[Warning: entity is aware of residual thread]

Turning her head a fraction of an inch, Makima locked her amber eyes onto the dark sidewalk across the street. "Angel," she noted smoothly. "He was assigned to the same squad for a short time. He knew the boy existed, though he never kept him close."

Standing beneath a flickering, broken streetlight on the opposite curb was the Angel Devil. His pristine white wings hung half folded against his back, his delicate face bearing a look of profound boredom mixed with mild irritation. Public Safety had clearly dispatched him to investigate why the entire building had been abruptly evacuated.

His gaze drifted up, found the two of them standing under the overhang, and lingered on Fitran a beat longer than necessary. Raising one pale, slender hand, Angel gave a lazy, half hearted wave.

The residual thread lunged. It wasn't forceful enough to rupture the seam, but Fitran felt a sudden surge of spatial pressure crawl up his forearm like freezing iron.

Across the street, Angel's eyes abruptly narrowed. He took a sharp step backward, his feathery wings twitching violently as if an unseen, suffocating weight had just grazed the tips of his feathers.

[Probe result: historical recognition only]

[No active claim. No blood vector. No possessive bond.]

[Residual response: brief interest → discard]

[Seam stress: spike → stabilizing]

The mechanical rattle died back down to silence. Exhaling a slow, weary breath, Angel looked visibly unsettled. Without crossing the street or offering another word, he turned on his heel and slunk away into the rain slicked alleyway.

Makima watched his figure vanish into the dark. "He felt it looking for something," she observed quietly. "And he felt it decide he was useless. That is the difference between a real route and a fading memory."

Closing his fingers firmly, Fitran reinforced the spatial boundary until the last lingering tremor vanished from his palm. "Power is still a live wire," he said. "Angel was only a footnote. Anything that never personally touched Denji won't even get that much."

"And anything that tries to cut that wire," Makima warned, glancing down at the fresh red circle blossoming through his bandage, "will make your anchor scream." She turned her gaze back to the dark street. "We are not testing those limits tonight. Keep the search pointed at her until we are somewhere the seam can afford to breathe."

Above them in the damp night air, the unresolved panel dimmed to a translucent haze, but it did not close. One final line remained, pulsing in steady rhythm with a distant, retreating heartbeat:

[SEARCH CONTINUES — PRIMARY VECTOR: POWER]

[LOCAL ANCHOR: STABLE FOR NOW]

***

The phone call came exactly twenty minutes after Angel's departure. A mid tier Devil had smashed through its containment three blocks east—a parasitic threat feeding off the terror of being spied on through glass. It had already claimed two civilian lives, transforming shopfront display windows into a jagged, lethal nest.

Makima didn't even slow her stride as they headed toward the site. "Public Safety requires its total extermination before it spills into the residential sector," she instructed smoothly, her voice cutting through the ambient hum of the city. "You will maintain your position behind my line until I signal you. If that spatial residual so much as twitches, you close whatever aperture you opened and fall back immediately. Am I clear?"

Fitran pulled his collar up against the cold drizzle. "Understood. But it has no reason to react. This creature never crossed paths with Denji."

"Verify that before you lean on assumptions," Makima replied, her heels tapping rhythmic warnings against the damp concrete.

They cornered the Devil inside a shuttered, dark electronics shop. Rows of dead television screens faced the street like hollow, pale eyes. The entity itself was a crouching mass of razor sharp mirrored glass and dripping copper wiring, centered around a massive, bulbous eyeball that swiveled toward them the moment they crossed the shattered threshold. The damp air reeked of ozone, burnt circuit boards, and wet rot.

[Threat classification: Devil — observation type]

[Denji link: none detected]

[Residual reaction: ignored]

[Seam status: stable]

Raising her slender right hand, Makima issued a flat, quiet command. "Stop."

The entity's grotesque glass limbs locked instantly mid pounce. A high pitched, grinding screech echoed as its mirror teeth scraped together in frustration. For three tense seconds, the binding command held firm. Then the oversized eyeball convulsed violently as her Control frayed—the creature lacked a centralized nervous system for her authority to lock onto completely.

"It is resisting full subjugation," Makima noted without a trace of panic in her tone. "Pin the core with gravity. Now."

Fitran slammed a heavy, localized gravity well straight into the center of its mass, crushing the mirrored torso against the floor until the concrete cracked beneath it. A spray of glass shrapnel detonated outward. A jagged sliver gouged across Fitran's ribs, while another embedded itself deep into the blood soaked pad on his arm. He gritted his teeth, holding the crushing field firm despite the sharp burn of pain.

"Sever the optic nerve with Voidlight," Makima directed, her tone clinical and cold. "Keep the blade narrow. Do not expand the spatial boundary."

Filtering his power into a thin beam of blinding white light, Fitran sliced clean through the primary nerve cluster before the creature could reorient. The central eye spasmed wildly. Stepping unhurriedly through the shower of falling glass, Makima didn't even blink as a stray fragment brushed her coat hem.

"Kneel," Makima commanded, sharpening her focus to compress its remaining functional limbs.

The entity collapsed flat against the shattered tile. Fitran maintained the crushing pressure until Makima closed the distance, ending its life with a precise, cold stroke through its core. The remaining screens flickered once and went dark. The sharp stench of ozone slowly dissolved, replaced by the cool scent of rain drifting through the ruined door.

[Encounter complete]

[Residual: no interaction recorded]

[Anchor integrity: unchanged]

Dabbing a speck of powdered glass from her cuff, Makima cast a cool glance at the fresh crimson line soaking through his shirt. "You exercised restraint. Most men in your position would have tried to copy my ability the second my command slipped."

Fitran pressed his good hand over the fresh wound on his ribs. "Attempting to copy your power while holding an unstable contract residual felt like a suicidal risk. Besides, that thing had no connection to the void I left behind. The residual didn't even glance up."

"Precisely," Makima said, turning her back on the corpse as the flashing red strobes of the Public Safety cleanup crew lit up the end of the alleyway. "We are finished here. Move."

Leaving the containment team to scrub the crime scene, they walked away into the dark. Neither spoke as they navigated two quiet blocks, the rain gradually thinning into a fine, chilly mist.

Makima brought them to a halt before a narrow, unassuming tavern with a flickering, half lit sign. The windowpanes were blurred with thick condensation from within, casting a soft amber glow onto the wet pavement.

"Off duty until the incident report is filed," Makima announced calmly. "You are bleeding out on the street. Sit down before you create a spectacle I am forced to explain."

The tavern was nearly deserted. A weary, middle aged bartender offered Makima a subtle nod of recognition and promptly placed two heavy tumblers of liquor on the wooden counter without a word.
