I was relieved when Alex told me he'll show up in a few hours, and I quickly folded the papers, putting them in the box with the ring as I shoved it into my drawer. I went to the website where I kept saying my mother's name, but I did not want to find out anything else unless I was sure about the person I was dealing with.
I was sitting there in the study when I heard someone call my name from the living room. The voice sounded like that of Vanessa, so I stayed quiet, not wanting her to know that I was home, but before I could tell, she was already knocking on my study door.
She was knocking so hard I could not ignore it. I walked over to the door and opened it to see her standing before the door; she was staring at me, looking all messed up.
"What happened to you, Vanessa?" I asked her, scanning her from her head down to her toe, but it was nothing like the usual way she carried herself.
