Chapter 2 - Prologue

Jay Jay stood by the window, staring at the rain-soaked city, her fingers trembling around the divorce papers. One year. That was all it was supposed to be. A contract. A compromise for her parents' happiness. Nothing more.

Keifer entered the room, his usual calm presence now tinged with something

unreadable. "You wanted to talk?"

She inhaled sharply. "It's time, Keifer. Our contract is over."

He glanced at the papers in her hand but didn't reach for them. "And that's what you want?"

Jay forced herself to nod. "Yes. You love Ella, don't you?"

Keifer brows furrowed. "Ella?" He let out a humorless chuckle. "Jay, she was never the one for me."

Her heart clenched. "Then why did you agree to this marriage?"

He stepped closer, voice steady. "Because you needed me. And because... I hoped, someday, you'd see me beyond just a friend."

Jay swallowed hard. "I can't do this, Keifer. I don't trust love. I don't trust.

Her heart clenched. "Then why did you agree to this marriage?"

He stepped closer, voice steady. "Because you needed me. And because... I hoped, someday, you'd see me beyond just a friend."

Jay swallowed hard. "I can't do this, Keifer. I don't trust love. I don't trust myself to love."

His gaze softened. "I never asked you to love me. But tell me honestly-do you want to leave?"

Silence stretched between them. The easy answer was yes. Walk away. But deep down, the thought of a life without Keifer felt... empty.

One signature would end it all. Or change everything.
