Chapter 142 - The Lake Trial

The lake trail wasn't far from town.

But somehow neither of them had ever gone.

Velithra led the way, following the small dirt path through the trees.

"You said you've never been here?" Kai asked, stepping over a root.

"I've passed it before," she said. "Just never had a reason to walk it."

Kai looked around.

Tall trees lined the path, their leaves whispering softly in the breeze. Sunlight filtered through the branches, leaving patches of gold along the ground.

"It's quieter than I expected," he said.

"That's why I wanted to come."

They walked slowly, not rushing.

This wasn't a hike.

It was just… time.

After a while the trees opened up and the lake appeared.

The water was calm, almost mirror-like, reflecting the sky above.

Kai stopped.

"Okay," he said. "This place is actually amazing."

Velithra smiled faintly. "I knew you'd like it."

They walked to the edge of the lake and sat down near the water.

Small ripples moved across the surface where the breeze touched it.

Kai picked up a flat stone and skipped it across the lake.

One bounce.

Two.

Three.

"Still got it," he said proudly.

Velithra rolled her eyes but picked up a stone herself.

Her throw landed with a single splash.

Kai laughed.

"That was tragic."

"It touched water, which was the goal," she defended.

They stayed there a while, talking about random things.

School stories.

Memories.

Little details they had never shared before.

Eventually the conversation quieted.

Velithra watched the lake for a moment before speaking.

"This place feels like time slows down."

Kai nodded.

"I kind of wish we found it earlier."

She glanced at him.

"Would it have changed anything?"

He thought about that.

Then shook his head.

"No," he said. "We probably found it when we were supposed to."

Velithra didn't answer right away.

Instead she leaned back on her hands, looking up at the sky.

Kai watched her for a moment before doing the same.

The branches above them swayed gently.

"You know what I'm realizing?" Kai said after a while.

"What?"

"The list isn't really about the things on it."

Velithra turned her head slightly.

"Then what is it about?"

He looked at her.

"It's about noticing the time we already have."

Her chest softened at that.

She reached over and intertwined her fingers with his.

"Then I think it's working."

Kai squeezed her hand once.

They sat like that for a long time.

No rush.

No pressure.

Just the quiet sound of water and wind in the trees.

Eventually Kai broke the silence again.

"Item two," he said, nodding toward the lake.

"Completed."

Velithra smiled.

"Six left."

But neither of them moved right away.

Because sometimes the best part of a moment…

was staying in it just a little longer.
