Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: A Mother’s Hidden Longing

The tavern had never felt so still.

Late evening light filtered through the old stained windows, casting soft amber hues across the hearthstone floor. The stew pot had cooled. Lira had gone to bed. And the air held the quiet weight of something about to change.

Raze stood behind the bar, drying the last mug. His movements were slow. Intentional.

He could sense her before she even entered the room.

Saria.

Her footsteps were softer than usual. Her hair unbraided now, falling past her shoulders. A single lock curled against her cheek, undone by the heat of the stove and the quietness of the night.

She didn't speak.

She just walked past him… and sat.

In the chair nearest the fire.

Raze dried his hands and moved toward her.

"You're not wearing your usual braid," he said quietly.

"It's late," she murmured. "No one to impress."

He stopped beside her chair. "You still impressed me."

She smiled — barely — but it was real.

"I'm not used to men staying after sundown."

"Then I'll stay quiet."

She looked up at him. Her eyes were not guarded now.

They were… searching.

"I don't remember the last time someone fixed something for me," she said. "Without asking. Without expecting."

"You don't need to remember," he replied. "You just need to accept it now."

Saria's lips parted, like she might argue — but she didn't.

Instead, she stood slowly.

Walked to the kitchen table.

And poured two cups of wine.

When she handed one to him, their fingers touched.

A small touch. But not accidental.

The two sat before the fire, wine in hand. The room bathed in a golden glow.

Raze didn't flirt. Didn't prod.

Instead, he listened.

Saria spoke of the early days, when the tavern was still her husband's dream. When Lira was a baby who wouldn't sleep unless rocked near the hearth. When a young widow learned how to barter bread for horseshoes and smile while bleeding.

She wasn't asking for sympathy.

She was remembering — and Raze was the first person in years who saw her as more than "the innkeeper."

He saw Saria.

Woman. Mother. Survivor.

Desirable not in spite of her past, but because of it.

A log in the hearth cracked softly. Shadows flickered.

Saria leaned her head against his shoulder.

"I shouldn't be this comfortable," she whispered.

"But you are."

"…Yes."

Her fingers rested lightly on his thigh.

Not bold.

But not innocent.

"Raze," she said, voice barely audible, "why haven't you tried to kiss me?"

He turned to her. Their faces close now. Her breath warm against his jaw.

"Because I wanted you to ask first."

She didn't speak.

She just leaned in.

And kissed him.

Their kiss deepened. Soft at first — then aching.

Hands moved slowly. Over shoulder. Down back. Fingers brushing through hair.

Her breath caught when he pressed his forehead to hers.

They didn't undress.

They didn't need to.

But her lips stayed on his neck long after the kiss ended.

And when they parted, she whispered:

"Don't vanish tomorrow. I need you to be real."

"I am," Raze promised, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "And I'm not leaving."

Meanwhile — The Wolf Matriarch Moves

Far away, in the sacred forest of Nyra-Val, the Wolf Matriarch opened her eyes.

Her silver gaze glowed in the dark.

"The Mother's fire has been stoked," she whispered. "The Conqueror is no longer a boy."

She stood, robes falling away, revealing markings of ancient magic etched along her back.

Her daughters — six warrior priestesses — knelt behind her, heads bowed.

"Bring him to me. Before winter falls."

---

The next morning, Raze found a small leather pouch beside his bed.

Inside — a silver pendant. Old. Well-polished. Clearly treasured.

A note lay beneath it.

"I don't need a protector. But it feels good to finally want one." — Saria

He closed his hand over the pendant.

And smiled.
