Standing on the threshold, looking utterly desperate and defeated, was Win.
The sight of him, pale and desperate, made the fragile peace shatter instantly. "What are you doing here?" King asked, his voice shaking.
"I came to apologi—" Win began, his voice choked.
King didn't let him finish. He slammed the door shut, locking it with a sharp click.
Charlotte looked up from her laptop, startled. "Who was that?"
"It's Win," King whispered, leaning against the door, trembling.
"What?" Charlotte shot up from the sofa. "The audacity! What does he think he has the right to come to my house after everything he did?"
King just looked at her, unable to speak. Charlotte, fueled by protective rage, marched to the door and flung it open. Win was still standing there.
"Hey! What are you doing here?" she demanded, her tone instantly hostile.
Win's voice was gentle, startlingly so. "I came to see you."
