Chapter 1 - Chapter one

I look at the nun above me. She is old and frail, yet she still cares so much for us.

"Come on, children, wake up!" The nun's shouts ring through the large sleeping hall.

"MMmm," "Ugh," "Yeah!" "Alright," "Already?"

"Come on, we're going to have breakfast."

"Did you hear that the knights are recruiting?"

"Yeah, I'm going to apply and become the best knight in the world!"

Hmm, I seem to be the only one without dreams of grandeur. Maybe I should check something like that out so I can secure my future. Hmm, what are the options? The church, the Royal Knights Order, and the Royal Wizards Order are the options if I want to live not as a peasant, but as a low-level noble. The best knights are treated slightly better than the lowest of nobles, and that also counts for the wizards, and I seem to have some magical abilities.

".....y ....ey ..hey, heeeeeellooo, you there? Are you theeheeereee??"

"Oh, yeah, yeah, what is the problem?"

"We want to know what you wanna be when you grow up. We're all gonna be knights!!"

"Yeah!!" "Alright!!" The boys shout in unison.

"Oh, uhm, I don't really know yet. I guess I would want to join the wizards."

"Really? Hmmm, aren't the wizards kinda lame? With those robes and those weird hats?"

"Yeah, and they are always old."

"But I guess it could suit you being, less, muscle..., you know! you're thin."

"Well yeah, and I kind of have an affinity for it, so I thought it would be the easiest one. Especially because I heard they allow anyone with merit to join."

I've never actually heard of anyone other than nobles ever joining, though.

Oh well, might as well try.

"Where are they going to be recruiting?"

"You didn't hear that already? They're doing it at the Royal Academy."

"How are we going to get there then?"

"Oh, you'll see."

That night, I sneak out into the forest to practice my magic again. It's not much; all I can pull off is a bit of floating water and lifting a few pebbles off the ground. As I turn to leave, I see a giant boar and quickly scurry off into some bushes.

It lets out one disgusting nasal squeal and runs toward me.

Oh no.

I run as fast as I can away from the damned boar.

"AAAAGGHH, HELP, HELP, HELP, I DON'T WANT TO DIE A VIRGIIIIN!"

Scream as I may, the boar is not slowing down. I quickly run out of stamina and trip. The beast takes advantage and bites into my foot, dragging me closer to its mouth.

"Please, please, please, ANYONE, HELP MEE!!"

I try my best to stop it with my weak magic, but it seems to be to no avail. I get an idea.

As I muster up all my mana, the boar starts gnawing on my leg, and I fill its nose up with all the water I can summon, and...

The boar is startled at the sight of magic and the water in its lungs, and loosens its grip on me just enough for me to run to safety.
