Chapter 8 - The Taste Of Freedom

The next day, the transfer was complete.

Trevor stood in the study, the same room where his father had abused and berated him so many times. Now, the man sat behind his mahogany desk, silent, a folder resting between them. Inside were the bank documents. Two million dollars wired to an account in Trevor's name and a deed to a sleek, modern apartment in the quiet part of the city.

No words were exchanged. Just signatures.

Trevor didn't thank him. His father didn't offer a farewell.

Outside, a black car waited in the circular driveway. The driver, dressed in a crisp, black suit opened the car without saying a word.

Trevor stepped in, his suitcase in his hand and the door was closed.

As the car pulled away, he didn't look back.

The mansion faded behind him, swallowed by trees and distance. The silence in the car was peaceful, not oppressive anymore. For the first time, he wasn't carrying the weight of that house. He was leaving it behind.

The drive took nearly an hour through winding roads, past the city skyline, into a quiet neighbourhood packed with parks and galleries. He also made sure that the neighbourhood was near his school. The car dropped him off at the building.

It was what he expected: sleek glass, clean lines, and a doorman who greeted him with a nod.

Trevor stepped into the lobby, the air cool and scented with cedar. The elevator opened with a soft chime, and he rode it up to the twelfth floor.

The apartment was waiting.

Inside, sunlight spilled across hardwood floors. The furniture was minimalist, tasteful. A fresh start.

Trevor dropped his bag by the door and went to the window. Below, the city moved on with cars, people, and even life.

He was free. Free from the burden. If only he had done this in his past life. If only he were confident, assertive, and determined to get his way. Just maybe, his life would have been different.

But the main problem was that he never should have chased Lily. He should have left when she repeatedly rejected him. Then he wouldn't have been used.

He left the window and walked to his suitcase. He stared at it for a long moment before he knew,t down and unzipped it. He proceeded to remove all the clothes inside and neatly folded them into the drawers.

He peeled off the shirt he had worn since arriving and folded it in the drawer.

Then he dressed in something new----jeans, a hoodie, sneakers. Nothing fancy. Just comfortable.

"System." He ordered. "Upload the video I took of Jayden."

Trevor closed the system and stretched. Now it was time to eat. He just wished to see the look on Jayden's face when he saw this.

Trevor stretched his arms, the hoodie loose and comfortable against his skin, and wandered into the kitchen. It was sleek and modern---stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, and cabinets that opened with a whisper.

He opened the fridge and scanned the contents. Eggs. Tomatoes. A loaf of bread. Some fresh herbs he picked up earlier. Simple, but enough.

He cracked the eggs into a bowl, whisking them with practiced ease. The rhythm was soothing. He diced the tomatoes, chopped a bit of basil, and tossed them all in the pan with a splash of olive oil. The sizzle filled the room, warm and alive.

As the omelette cooked, he sliced the bread and dropped ig in the toaster. The scent of browning crust and herbs filled the air giving a pleasant aroma.

He plated the food carefully, carried it to the small dining table by the window, and took a small bite.

It was good. Not perfect. Not gourmet. But it was his.

He proceeded to polish down the food and then gave a small belch before drinking a cup of water.

[Ding!]

Trevor stared as the interface opened up without warning.

[The system will be updated in one minute.]

[Due to its updating, the system will be inactive for 24 hours.]

Trevor gazed at it in shock. What was going on? Maybe new features or something else will unlock.

He rested his back on the chair. He wasn't worried. He was even excited about the big problem Jayden was going to have tomorrow when he saw this.

Trevor just couldn't wait to see the look on his face.
