Chapter 70 - The Betrayal of Dawn

The city had not yet awakened when the first light began to crawl across the fractured skyline of Hoshigahara. The dawn was a pale thing, weak and colorless, as if the sun itself hesitated to rise over streets painted with treachery. Shinomiya Reiji stood on the rooftop of a crumbling tower, the blood of Renji still clinging to his blade, the memory of their final clash gnawing at his soul.

The oath they had sworn was dead.

And in its ashes, betrayal thrived.

---

Down below, the city stirred with whispers. Word of Renji's death had already spread—faster than truth, carried by mouths loyal to shadows Reiji could no longer trace. By the time the bells tolled across the quarter, the story was no longer his.

"They say Reiji killed him in cold blood."

"No trial. No defense. Just execution."

"He was supposed to be his brother in arms…"

The voices twisted, tangled, until Reiji could no longer distinguish them from the echoes in his own head. He had killed a traitor, yet the city painted him as the traitor. It was a betrayal not by one man, but by the very fabric of the world he had sworn to protect.

---

At the heart of the Court's domain, the Silent Chamber burned with restless energy. Figures cloaked in black gathered, their eyes hidden behind masks of iron and glass. They spoke in tones that dripped like venom.

"Renji Takasawa is dead."

"By Reiji's hand."

"So the blade turns upon itself."

One figure leaned forward, the edge of his mask gleaming. "This is what comes of loyalty bound too tightly. Even shadows strangle when pulled against each other."

"And what of Reiji?" another demanded. "Is he still to be trusted? Or is he now the blade that must be broken?"

The chamber darkened with silence, until a single voice cut through like a blade:

"Reiji has become both executioner and condemned. His dawn is already drenched in betrayal. He may live, but his name is already dead."

The decree spread like wildfire. The Shadow they had once trusted was now the hunted.

---

Reiji felt it before he saw it—the shifting in the air, the tension in every gaze cast his way as he walked the alleys of Hoshigahara. Soldiers once loyal kept their hands near their hilts. Informants slipped into shadows rather than approach him. Even the silence seemed to accuse him.

At the far end of the district, a group awaited him. Among them was Ayaka, a former ally whose sharp eyes had always carried a flicker of respect. Tonight, that respect was gone, replaced by the cold steel of duty.

"Reiji," she called, her voice steady though her hands trembled against her blade. "The Court has spoken. You are charged with betrayal. Renji's blood stains you, and with it, the dawn itself."

Reiji's jaw tightened. "And if I refuse to kneel?"

Ayaka's eyes glistened, not with weakness, but with sorrow. "Then the dawn becomes your battlefield. And I… will be your enemy."

---

The confrontation that followed was not the swift clash of assassins but the slow unraveling of bonds. Every strike Ayaka dealt was heavy with the weight of hesitation, every parry Reiji made laced with unspoken regret. Their blades danced, but neither struck to kill—not yet.

"You don't believe their lies," Reiji growled, forcing her back. "You knew Renji as I did. You know what he chose."

Ayaka's blade trembled, her breathing sharp. "I don't know what I believe anymore. All I know is that the Court will never forgive you. And if I stand with you, then I, too, am marked a traitor."

Her voice cracked. "Why, Reiji? Why did you let it come to this?"

His answer was raw, unpolished. "Because betrayal doesn't ask permission. It comes like dawn—whether we are ready or not."

Their final clash sparked across the cobblestones, light scattering against the shadows of the waking city. When their blades locked, Reiji whispered low enough for only her to hear:

"If you must betray me, then let it be with your blade. Better that than with silence."

Ayaka's eyes widened. Her grip faltered. And in that hesitation, Reiji broke the lock and vanished into the alleys, his cloak a phantom trail behind him.

---

By the time the sun fully broke across Hoshigahara, Reiji was already gone. But the city did not greet the light. It drowned instead in whispers, rumors, and decrees.

The dawn, once a symbol of renewal, had become a monument to betrayal.

And in the shadows where no light could reach, Reiji understood:

The war was no longer between the Court and its enemies.

The war was within the shadows themselves.
