Chapter 8 - 8.

Diego woke up early, as he always did. He stretched his arms and sat up, rubbing his eyes.

Today was another day of work, another day of keeping up appearances and his cool in check especially around Benjamin.

He walked to his closet, where several expensive and personally customized suits hung neatly but he went past them to the other ones, none of them were expensive or stood out.

That was the point.

He had ordered Louis, to buy middle-class suits nothing too fancy, nothing too cheap.

Just enough to blend in.

Just enough to keep his low profile.

Diego picked out a simple gray suit and a plain white shirt. He dressed slowly, making sure everything was perfect.

The tie was slightly worn, the shoes polished but not shiny, he looked at himself in the mirror. He looked like any other ordinary cheap man the people referred to him.

That was good, it was what he wanted.

"Good morning, Jarvis," Diego said, speaking to the home monitor system.

Jarvis smooth, robotic voice responded, "Good morning, Master. The weather today is mild. Would you like me to order your coffee?"

"Yes," Diego said.

She sent a message to the maids to to take care of it and they brewed his coffee just the way he liked it black, no sugar.

He walked downstairs, his footsteps quiet on the marble floors, The mansion was huge, everything was elegantly in place.

Just as he got down a maid bowed holding a tray of coffe.

"Morning Master"

He grabbed his coffee and took a sip.

Perfect

Before giving her a nod and walking away.

Outside, his driver was already waiting by the car. The driver, a quiet man named Marco, nodded as Diego approached.

"Good morning, Master," Marco said.

"Morning," Diego replied, sliding into the back seat.

The drive to the company was short, too short, really but Diego had instructed Marco to drop him off a few blocks away.

He didn't want to arrive in a fancy car, he needed to walk the last part, like any normal employee.

When the car stopped, Diego stepped out. "Pick me up at the same spot after work," he said.

Marco nodded and drove off.

He adjusted his suit and began walking, the streets were busy now, full of people rushing to work.

Finally, he reached the company building.

As he walked inside, the new secretary at the front desk barely glanced at him. She was young, with sharp eyes and an impatient expression.

"Name?" she asked, not even looking up.

"Diego," he said calmly.

She frowned, flipping through some papers. "I don't see you on the list."

Diego kept his cool. "Check again. Or call Louis."

She sighed dramatically but picked up the phone. After a short conversation, she waved him through without another word.

Rude.

But Diego didn't react.

He simply walked past her, heading toward the small office Louis had arranged for him.

It was a tiny space just a desk, a chair, and a computer, nothing fancy or something that would draw attention.

He went through the papers and files. He has so much work to do and juggling it with the low profile thingy wasn't helping.

The desk was neat, with only a few files and a computer and the room was quiet, the only sound the faint hum of the air conditioner.

Then, there was a soft knock on the door.

"Come in," Diego said without looking up.

The door opened, and Louis stepped inside. He was more than just an assistant he was loyal, trusted. But sometimes, he forgot the rules.

Louis closed the door behind him and stood straight. "Master," he said in a low voice, "the meeting is about to start. They are waiting for you."

Diego's eyes flicked up, cold and warning. His voice was calm but firm. "Louis. How many times must I remind you? Here, you do not call me that."

Louis swallowed hard. He knew he had made a mistake. "I—I'm sorry, Diego . It won't happen again."

Diego held his gaze for a long moment, making sure the message was clear. Then, he gave a small nod. "Good. Now, let's go."

Louis nodded quickly. "Yes."

Diego stood up, straightening his plain suit. He made sure everything was in place no wrinkles, no loose threads, appearance mattered, even in this small role.

Louis opened the door for him, and Diego stepped out into the hallway. The office was busy now, employees walking back and forth, phones ringing, printers humming.

They walked side by side down the long hallway toward the boardroom. Louis kept his steps measured, his hands clasped behind his back.

He was careful now, careful not to make another mistake.

Finally, they reached the boardroom. The door was slightly open, and Diego could hear voices inside.

Louis stopped and turned to him. "Sir, they are all here. Should I announce you?"

Diego shook his head. "No. We walk in quietly. No unnecessary attention."

Louis nodded. "Understood."

Diego took a deep breath. Then, he pushed the door open and stepped inside.

The room fell silent.

All eyes turned to him.

But Diego didn't react He simply walked to his seat not at the head of the table, but somewhere in the middle.

Just another employee.

Just another face in the crowd.

Louis followed, standing slightly behind him.

The meeting was about to begin.

He watched as the door slipped open Benjamin walking in.

Late as usual.

"Sorry I'm late we can begin the meeting." He announced as though he owned the place.

Deigo's jawline hardened but he knew better than to react.

"Will Mr Blackwood be joint us?" He asked his eyes roaming around in search for Marcus.

Deigo cleared his throat, "He's away for a business trip, leaving me in charge of his affairs"

Benjamin narrows his eyes at me in disbelieve and anger but he quickly masked it away seeing the other stakeholders so as not to create a bad impression.

"Okay" he simply said.
