I
awake to a beautiful sunrise, shining through my balcony window, albeit in a
concrete bunker style building, including blast doors, which of course have not
been used in 200 years. My name is Michael#7762, I am currently the best
bioengineered specimen that AI could harvest from the available gene pool.
Today I must venture out and supervise the existing operations to recolonize the
earth. Unfortunately, all our attempts have been unsuccessful to date, and the
current colonies are struggling. The models recommended by AI are all running
into issues, recognizing the fact that we are running out of supplies to
maintain our own existence, all the colonies are having to exist in a primitive
lifestyle.
I
am one of many supervising several of the colonies, within a five-hundred-mile
radius of our facility, affectionately called Heaven. Our job requires reporting to AI the age,
progress and observed abilities of the remaining earth population. There are a
total of 12 such facilities in the world left, Heaven started with a population
of a thousand, now has 565 left, it was down to 400 at one time but has
recovered to some degree. We could probably increase our numbers swiftly, but
GOD insist that the number of educated humans with heightened abilities be kept
to the minimum required to support the new DNA colonies.
Some
of the colonies are vestiges of the previous civilizations but devoid of
advanced education, and they are only allowed to hand down information via
whatever skills they develop, none of the knowledge from the years pre-holocaust
is allowed, AI has determined that mankind is too self-destructive and advanced
knowledge would cause harm to their development. What scholars were left were
killed if they were seen as a threat to the deadly leadership that had evolved
in these Vestige groups. The people left
that had any higher knowledge learned quickly to keep it to themselves.
This
caused a lot of issues because some of the colonies (DNA) were seeded under
AI's guidance and every time they contacted the Vestige groups they wound up
dead. Most of the Vestige groups had
adapted a nomadic lifestyle, foraging and gathering. They have become
consummate killers with skills of forced learning by their ever-changing
environments. Unfortunately, they also
kill each other when different Vestige groups meet and this decimated their
populations, perpetuating the downward spiral of mankind's numbers.
