Neris walked beside Nicklaus in measured silence, their footsteps echoing softly against the polished stone floor. Each step carried him farther from the solitude of his chambers and closer to a fate he had spent months dreading.
The banners lining the walls—silver and blue entwined with crimson and gold—fluttered gently in the cold draft, symbols of a union forged not by love, but by necessity.
His gaze skimmed over the decorations as they passed. Lady Rhea had overseen every detail herself. Frosted crystal chandeliers hung from vaulted ceilings, catching the light like frozen stars.
White lilies and winter roses adorned the pillars, their fragrance faint but persistent. The aisle leading toward the hall had been strewn with pale petals, delicate and pristine.
