Chapter 1 - First child

Anonymous Point of View

I opened my eyes to the lab I had been held in since childhood. Nothing was different from the usual, save for one thing: it was eerily quiet. There were no scientists in the room. I was still trapped in a capsule filled with water, floating with the breathing apparatus over my mouth. I wore a plain white clothes, but something else strange had appeared.

A familiar scent... it was the smell of blood.

My instincts and senses are far superior to those of a normal human.

After all, I am an Awakened.

I was only three when my abilities awakened in a simple village. I was an orphan, but I never fit in with people. People always said I was strange. I never cried when I was hurt, I never laughed or smiled. I seemed to be without emotions or feelings, barely registering pain When I get hurt. At the orphanage, they named me Yuri. It was on my third birthday that my powers fully awakened.

The strength of the Awakened is determined by how early they manifest their abilities. The younger they are, the more powerful they become.

Shortly after my awakening, one of the orphanage staff sold me to slave traders. I was just a three-year-old child. Even though I was far stronger than my peers, I was no match for a grown man.

I was sold and locked in a cell before a mad scientist bought me. He experimented on me for seven years. To be honest, he was a deranged genius. I managed to master my abilities and became much stronger, yet I was still only at the first level of awakening. My ability, they believed, was simply to disappear.

I had hidden my true powers. Even though I was a prisoner, I was fully capable of escaping. But there were strong guards and other powerful individuals. A direct escape was impossible. And even if I did get out, where would I go? What would I do? If I failed, who knew what they would do to me after they caught me?

Now, back to the present. The head of the lab, that mad scientist, ran into the room with terror in his eyes. I knew he was running from something. How?

Because I sensed something moving with superhuman speed approaching him.

A person lunged at him from behind, stabbing him through the heart.

The attacker was a tall adult dressed in black with his face covered. Another masked person, wearing the same black uniform, appeared shortly after.

"Commander, all the scientists and guards have been eliminated," the second man said.

In that moment, I knew I had to escape. I wasn't going to risk finding out if they would kill me next. I ripped myself free from the sensor wires and shattered the capsule. I shot toward the door at an incredible speed, desperate to get away. But a blow to my neck stopped me cold—a strike so powerful that if I weren't Awakened, it would have surely broken my spine.

I understood what happened. The first man had struck me. Then, everything went black.
