Chapter 10: Luis and the Clarity Gu
The intel from the tech broker's system was a treasure trove. It was a digital map of the Miami criminal underworld, a who's who of shady characters and their even shadier dealings. And in the middle of it all, a name popped up that made Adam's heart skip a beat. Luis.
I know that name, he said, his voice full of a giddy, boyish excitement. He's... well, he's a legend. A fast-talking, charming legend. And he's a part of a small crew that's planning a heist.
Skye, with her newfound Techno Gu abilities, was already ahead of him. I'm seeing it. A small-time heist on a warehouse full of high-end electronics. It's a textbook heist. A textbook, and very predictable, heist. Do you want me to stop it?
No, Adam said, a slow, predatory grin on his face. We're going to let it happen. We're going to let him do his thing. And then... we're going to catch him.
It was a risky plan, a plan that could have gone horribly wrong, but Adam knew it would work. He had the Gu System on his side, and he had his meta-knowledge. He knew that Luis was a good person, a guy who was just trying to make a living in a world that wasn't designed for him. He just needed a little push in the right direction.
He and Skye set up a plan. They would let Luis and his crew get to the warehouse, and then they would spring their trap. It wasn't a malicious trap, not a violent one. It was a psychological one.
They watched from a distance as Luis, with his two friends, Kurt and Dave, a motley crew of good-hearted criminals, began their heist. They were a bit clumsy, a little loud, but they were also… charming.
I can't believe this is a real thing, Skye said, a small, amused giggle in her voice. They're like the Three Stooges of crime.
I know, right? Adam said, a big grin on his face. But trust me, he's a good guy. He just needs a little... clarity.
[Main Mission: Recruit Luis. Reward: 10 Coins and Clarity Gu.]
The system's mission popped into his mind, a welcome, digital confirmation. This was it. The next step. The next team member.
When Luis and his friends finally made it out of the warehouse, their hands full of expensive electronics, Adam and Skye were waiting for them. Adam was standing in the middle of the street, a flashlight in his hand, a look of disappointment on his face.
"Gentlemen," he said, his voice a professional, authoritative hum. "I'm afraid your heist is over."
Luis, with his fast-talking, charming personality, started to launch into one of his famous monologues. "Wait, wait, wait. You got it all wrong. We're not criminals. We're... we're just testing the security system for a client. We're... we're a very professional security consulting firm."
Adam just stood there, his face a deadpan mask. He let Luis ramble, his Liquor Worm Gu helping him to see the truth behind the words. He could see the fear, the desperation, the good heart, all hidden underneath the fast-talking facade.
After a few minutes, Luis finally ran out of breath. He was standing there, his chest heaving, his hands full of electronics, a look of utter, bewildered defeat on his face.
"Are you done?" Adam said, his voice calm and professional.
Luis nodded.
"Good," Adam said. "Because I'm going to offer you a choice. You can go to jail, or you can join me. You can join a team that's going to change the world. The choice is yours. And the electronics... well, they're going back to the warehouse."
Luis looked at his friends, and then he looked at Adam. He saw the genuine look of sincerity in his eyes, the look of a man who was offering him a second chance. He saw a way out. A way to be more than just a small-time criminal. A way to be a hero.
