Chapter 156 - Chapter 156: Become the King of Horror Games!

Insane paying player ratio!

Players? They don't care much.

They're here for fun, not game revenue.

Paying player stats? Meh, doesn't change the gameplay.

All they need is a fairer model, and Apex delivers.

But for the gaming industry? This is an asteroid smashing Earth!

58.2%!

A game live for just seven days!

Over half the players paying, nearly 60%!

What's that mean?

If games were kids, Apex's peers are still crawling.

But Apex? It's running the National Games, snagging medals against pros trained for years.

This ain't just strength—it's beyond normal metrics!

Who sprints a hundred meters at birth?

You can't dream this up!

Yet WindyPeak pulled it off. Apex made it real.

The news hit, and the industry lost it!

Sections cover everything: hiring, resources, data, and straight-up bragging.

Today, the hottest post in the "boasting and banter" section screamed:

"Huge News! Apex's First-Week Paying Player Ratio Hits 58.2%?!"

Ten minutes old, hundreds of replies already!

#2RatKing: Yo, claiming second floor. These numbers are nuts! Did WindyPeak Data goof? 🤔

#5CrispyNugget: Nah, WindyPeak Data flagged it as too wild for the average. They triple-checked it.

#7ShadowMist: Can confirm, our team crunched the numbers. Data's legit, checked thrice. I'm gutted.

#11SparkVibe: Beyond wild. Our execs at FireEye got called into a meeting. They're dissecting Apex's payment model.

#12NoParsleyPlz: Gotta say, that pass system is clutch—locks in daily logins and cash.

#16ChillyBear: 58.2% is unreal. Even Nebula Games is studying it. Nebula! Can you believe?

#17WoundedWarden: Our game's close to Apex. Thought our 7% was solid, then bam—58.2%. 😭

#21PixelPanda: This ratio's off the charts. Week one's almost 60%. A year in, it's hitting 90? 🪨

#34BlessUp: Pfft, no shock. Titanfall outdid IndieVibe X2's sales by 103%—sold more than cabins! Humanly possible? 😂

#38BrassBullet: From Titanfall to Apex, WindyPeak's stats are bonkers. No competition…

#59SlideMaster: This data's gonna shake up free-to-play in-app purchases.

#92JadeCurse: Word from dozens of studios—pass + no attributes is sparking a trend…

#99ColaCan: Yo, I'm at Zenith Studios. We're already cooking up passes…

Hot topic!

Industry folks nailed it.

The pass + no attributes model is a full-on smackdown to the free-to-play market.

Maybe players are fed up with pay-to-win, or WindyPeak's accessory design is just that good, or Titanfall's nostalgia bonus hits hard.

Whatever it is, 60% paying players means every free-to-play dev is eyeballing Apex.

Big players are moving, chasing WindyPeak's wave, focusing on game quality, accessories, and this hyped, fair payment model…

"No way I need shampoo, shower gel, and cleanser, right?"

"It's checked luggage, won't weigh you down. Just take it."

"Okay, but… what's this?"

"Neck massager. Japan's got killer ones. You're hooked already. Use it daily to stay loose for work."

"Fine, but this mask?"

"Men's only. Slap one on when you think of it."

"I'll forget."

"No prob, I'll ping you. Oh, razor's here. Toiletries there. Meds here. Clothes over there…"

Monday morning, Gus Harper's apartment.

Gus, suited up, buttoned his cuffs while Zoey Parker, in strawberry bear pajamas, ran through his suitcase contents.

She went on, tireless.

Warmth spread in Gus's chest, his gaze softening.

Since yesterday, Zoey's been all over his Japan trip prep.

Laptop to soap, shopping to packing—she handled it all.

His suitcase? A treasure chest, stuffed with supplies and her care.

Gus isn't helpless—he's lived alone, self-sufficient.

But this time, he let her take over, soaking in the warmth.

"…That's it. Got it?" Zoey locked the suitcase, looking up.

"Got it." Gus fastened his Mickey watch, smiling, eyes on her.

Zoey squirmed under his stare, nose wrinkling. "You didn't hear a word. Bet you didn't even peek inside."

Gus, caught, flushed. "It's not like it'll sprout legs and bolt. I'll sort it in Japan."

"Fair." Zoey grinned, hoisting the suitcase by its handles.

They headed to the door.

"House is yours now?" Gus scanned the apartment, now feeling like home, then looked at Zoey.

"No sweat, I got this!" Zoey smirked, patting her chest.

Gus opened his mouth, hesitated, then stopped.

Zoey scratched her head, waving. "See ya in a month or two?"

"Yeah." Gus nodded. "I'm out. Max and the crew are downstairs, driving me to the airport."

He turned, grabbed the door handle, ready for Japan.

But then—

"Gus!"

He spun back.

A peach-sweet scent hit, and warmth enveloped him. Zoey, on tiptoes, wrapped her arms around his neck.

"Polite hug… safe travels," she mumbled, voice soft as a whisper.

Gus's brain blanked.

He stiffly hugged her slim waist, patting lightly. "Uh… smooth… winds…"

"Fair winds," Zoey giggled, patting his back. "Smoke less, eat fruit."

"Fruit's pricey there," Gus murmured.

"Who're you underestimating?" Zoey pouted, rolling her eyes. "I'll cover it."

Gus grinned. "Boss is loaded."

"Report work daily," Zoey added.

"Deal," Gus said. "Weather's cooling soon. Grab your clothes. Thermometer, fever meds, basics are in the sideboard's kit. If you're sick, call Chloe…"

"Got it," Zoey smiled, lips curling like petals. "I'm not helpless."

Silence.

Gus softened. "So, we…"

Zoey bit her lip.

They let go, laughed, and locked eyes.

Gus pushed the door open, waved back. "Later!"

"Brave dude, go make miracles!" Zoey called.

Bang.

Car door shut. Gus tapped the front seat. "Yo, SeaTac Airport."

"No meter," Max Wheeler grinned, starting the car.

"Damn, you guys are ruthless!" Gus faked shock. "I'm reporting you."

"Go for it," Max smirked, acting like a million bucks. "SeaTac's a 2,000-word gossip fee, non-negotiable."

"I've got nothing," Gus said, glancing out the window, guilty. "Pure as snow, bright as a bulb, lighting up the night—"

"Brother Gus, quit flexing!" Ethan "Piggie" Vance, in the passenger seat, cut in. "Your grin's been ear-to-ear since you left the building. You floated out like you're on skates. I saw it."

Gus: …

That obvious?

Scratching his head: "No gossip, swear…"

"Lame, Gus," Max groaned. "Piggie and I crossed half the city to see you off. For what? Your juicy gossip! And you're holding out?"

"Hurtful!" Gus clutched his chest. "Thought you came for brotherly love!"

"Pfft," Max scoffed. "No love beats gossip. Spill, or I'm dropping you at the train station."

"You're threatening me?!" Gus gawked at their shamelessness.

"Yup!" Max flashed teeth in the rearview, all menace. "Or I'm buying you breakfast."

Piggie chimed in: "That's how we roll."

Gus gave up, rolling his eyes. "Fine. We shopped yesterday. Zoey got me travel stuff, packed my bag. I didn't wanna bring it, but she insisted. That's it. No tea."

Max gasped. "You call that no tea?!"

"What tea?" Gus shrugged. "Just supplies and packing."

"Listen to yourself!" Max wailed. "I should've recorded you for Zoey. She'd be out the door!"

"What?!" Gus blinked. "That bad?"

"Obviously!" Max went full professor. "Why'd Zoey insist on packing your stuff?"

"Uh…" Gus scratched his head. "Scared I wouldn't vibe with Japan?"

"Idiot!" Max's voice jumped. "Global trade! Food, clothes, toiletries—Japan's got it all. Vibe's no issue!"

"True…" Gus couldn't argue.

"She doesn't care about Japan!" Max sighed. "She wants you using her stuff, thinking of her every day!"

"Mind blown!" Max ranted. "It's not nothing!"

The car zoomed to SeaTac, Gus speechless.

No wonder Zoey was so set on packing.

"Really?" Gus mulled, smacking his lips. "I thought—"

"What'd you think?" Max cut in, exasperated. "Zoey's Parker Capital's only heir! A trust-fund princess! You think she just shacks up with a dude?"

Hiss—

Max's words hit deep.

Gus always felt a vague spark with Zoey, but it was hazy.

Now, Max's lecture clicked like a tidal wave. I get it.

The car stopped at SeaTac.

After hugs and goodbyes with Max and Piggie, Gus hit the airport.

Dragging his suitcase to check-in, he replayed Max's words: "Zoey's gone this far. Man up. Show some spine, even if you're not blunt."

Gus nodded.

Time to step up, show some intent.

But first!

Silent Hill P.T.'s calling.

Max's talk also reminded him: Zoey's a Parker heiress.

To match her, feelings ain't enough—Gus needs game.

With his system, no regrets.

WindyPeak's nearing the billion-dollar club, a mid-tier player.

Small step.

The gaming world's booming—SparkVibe, FireEye, Zenith Studios, Nebula Games, IndieVibe, Komina, Yunwei, Weiwangdi…

Gus will climb, hit the throne, and rule gaming.

First stop: king of horror games.

Starting with Silent Hill P.T.!
