Chapter 7 - Chapter 7

The first light of dawn crept through the manor's windows, casting a gentle glow over the worn tapestries. The night's ordeal had left Elara weary yet invigorated, the cellar's shadows replaced by a fragile hope. Elias was in custody, his schemes exposed, and the Valmont estate hummed with a tentative peace.

Elara sat in the library, the journal and recovered papers spread before her. Cassian entered, his steps quieter than usual, a tray of tea in hand. He set it down, his eyes meeting hers with a warmth that felt new. "You didn't sleep," he observed, pouring a cup.

"Neither did you," she replied, accepting the tea with a small smile. "Too much to process."

He nodded, sitting across from her. "Elias's betrayal… it changes everything. But you stood with us. Why?"

Elara sipped the tea, its warmth grounding her. "Because this is my home now, too. And because I see the man behind the rumors—not a monster, but someone worth fighting for."

Cassian's gaze softened, a rare vulnerability breaking through. "I've hidden behind those rumors to protect myself. But with you, I don't need to. Not anymore."

Before they could delve deeper, Gideon strode in, his grin returning like the sun after a storm. "Good news! The authorities have Elias locked away, and Lila's sister is safe. Seems our little family's intact—for now." He paused, eyeing them. "And you two look… cozy. Progress?"

Elara laughed, the sound lightening the room. "Perhaps. What about you, Gideon? Will you stay?"

He shrugged, leaning against a shelf. "Someone has to keep you both in line. Besides, I owe you for clearing my name."

Cassian rose, extending a hand to Elara. "Walk with me? The gardens need seeing."

She took his hand, its strength a quiet promise, and they stepped outside. The gardens bloomed with roses and lavender, the morning air crisp and alive. They walked in companionable silence, the weight of the past lifting with each step.

"I want to rebuild this place," Cassian said, his voice steady. "Not with secrets, but with trust. Starting with us."

Elara squeezed his hand, her heart swelling. "Then let's do it together."

As the sun climbed higher, the Valmont estate began to shed its darkness, its future shaped by the bond they'd forged. The shadows lingered, but with each shared glance, they faded, giving way to a dawn of hope.
