Chapter 1 - The Proposal We Lost

The Beginning of Success

Frankie and Jimmy had built their startup, Apex Innovations, from the ground up. Best friends since college, their bond had weathered investor rejections, sleepless nights, and product flops. By their early thirties, they'd finally made it. The company was profitable, investors were knocking, and Forbes had just named them "Entrepreneurs to Watch."

Life was good. And then Bella walked in.

She wasn't just beautiful—she was brilliant. A marketing consultant with a sharp mind and a laugh that could stop a room. They hired her to lead a crucial product launch, and she dazzled everyone. But what neither Frankie nor Jimmy expected was the effect she'd have on both of them.

It started subtly. Frankie would linger a little longer at Bella's desk. Jimmy would invite her to brainstorm sessions that mysteriously didn't require marketing input. Soon, meetings turned into lunch dates. Compliments turned into inside jokes.

Bella remained charming and professional, never favoring one over the other. But the tension between the founders began to grow.

"Maybe we should be more... transparent about how we feel," Jimmy said one evening, staring into his scotch.

Frankie looked at him. "About the company or about Bella?"

Jimmy didn't answer. He didn't have to.

Their business synergy began to crack. Decisions once made in harmony now sparked arguments. Investor meetings became cold. They still delivered results, but the warmth was gone.

One weekend, Jimmy booked a getaway to Napa and invited Bella. She politely declined. Frankie sent flowers to her apartment. She returned them, gently but firmly.

Neither man gave up. They didn't talk about it anymore, but the silence screamed. Their friendship, once unbreakable, was crumbling under the weight of their shared desire.

Jimmy made the first move. A quiet dinner, a velvet box, a heartfelt speech.

Bella looked heartbroken. "Jimmy… you're incredible. But I can't say yes. I don't want to come between you and Frankie."

Days later, Frankie tried. A rooftop picnic, city lights glowing below.

"I care about you," he said. "I think we could be something amazing."

Bella shook her head, eyes wet. "You already were something amazing—with Jimmy. You built something beautiful. I won't be the reason it ends."

She left Apex Innovations quietly, taking a role overseas. Her departure left a void neither man wanted to admit. The company limped on. So did their friendship, scarred but not destroyed.

Months passed. They began to talk again. Not about her—not directly—but in the pauses between meetings, in the way they apologized without words.

"I miss her," Jimmy said one night
