Chapter 9 - Rize Kamishiro's Background

Completely disregarding the Ghoul's corpse, Yakuchi Kei casually tossed his Kagune aside, then took the crowbar with him.

He didn't want to leave any traces of himself at the scene, lest the police or CCG Investigator come knocking on his door.

Of course, his self-preservation act was legal in itself, and Ghouls are not protected by any laws; the law's corresponding subjects are humans. He was just too lazy to explain how he killed a Ghoul without a Quinque.

As long as he didn't leave obvious traces, the death of a Ghoul wouldn't cause too much of a stir, because Ghouls dying at the hands of their own kind is a normal phenomenon, and the police and Investigators generally don't care too much about a Ghoul's true cause of death.

As for leaving that Kagune there, it didn't matter. This thing, once separated from the Ghoul's body's nutrient supply, would slowly wither away until it disappeared.

This is also why the Quinque's manufacturing materials must include a Kakuho in addition to the Kagune. The Kakuho supplies rc cells to the Kagune; to be precise, the Kagune itself is hardened rc cells.

"Suddenly, I feel... it seems necessary to find a way to get a Quinque..."

As he left the alley, Yakuchi Kei thought to himself.

Given his current situation, having a Quinque as a weapon would be best; dealing with Ghouls bare-handed was still a bit troublesome.

But to obtain a Quinque, one must join the CCG, whose full name is the Ghoul Countermeasures Bureau, a government agency in Tokyo specifically dealing with Ghouls.

Only CCG Investigators, and at least those who have passed the assessment to become Second Class Investigators, are qualified to possess their own Quinque.

Within the CCG, the ranks of Ghoul Investigators from lowest to highest are: Third-Class, Second Class, First Class, First Class, Associate Special Class, and Associate Special Class. However, below Third-Class Investigator, there is actually an Investigator Assistant, who is basically a non-combatant only responsible for miscellaneous tasks, so they don't have a formal rank.

Yakuchi Kei thought about when he would go to the CCG next.

20th Ward, cinema.

After meeting at the Antique Coffee Shop, Yakuchi Kei and Kamishiro Rize had already arrived at the cinema.

This world was probably in the early 2000s or 2010s. People were still mostly using flip phones, which weren't as smart or convenient, so people were more willing to go to places like cinemas.

After buying movie tickets, Yakuchi Kei and Kamishiro Rize chose a middle seat and sat together.

Although Yakuchi Kei himself wasn't very interested in watching movies in a cinema, since he was accompanying a girl, he was willing to watch the entire movie.

No matter what, Kamishiro Rize was a girl after all, even if this girl was unusually brutal...

Halfway through the movie, Yakuchi Kei gradually discovered that the core story of this movie was a bit...

One could say it was a bit similar to Kamishiro Rize's experiences.

The female protagonist in this movie suffered long-term unfair treatment from her family; the family purely used her as a tool to make money and favored her older and younger brothers.

And based on the current plot progression, a male protagonist has already been introduced, and it's estimated that the plot will then develop into the male protagonist helping the female protagonist escape from her dysfunctional family.

As for Kamishiro Rize's own experiences, Yakuchi Kei, who had read tokyo ghoul, was very clear about them; her experiences were even more tragic than the female protagonist in the movie.

Kamishiro Rize was born into the Washuu Family, which is a Ghoul family, and arguably the strongest Ghoul family in all of Japan.

Kamishiro Rize's bloodline concentration was extremely high; she possessed a pure Washuu Ghoul bloodline without any impurities. Logically, such a person in a fantasy world would be the most valued genius in the family, but Kamishiro Rize's actual situation was precisely the opposite...

The Washuu Family, as a Ghoul family, actually revered human bloodlines. Washuu Ghouls with higher human bloodline concentrations had higher statuses within the family, which led to Kamishiro Rize's extremely low status.

Unlike the principle of mixed bloodlines in Half-Human or Half-Ghoul, bloodline is bloodline, and lineage is lineage. Most Ghouls have some human bloodline within them.

While Kamishiro Rize's status was low, she could not live in the Washuu Family; instead, she was banished to a place called White Garden.

She couldn't even inherit the name "Washuu"; without a surname, she only later inherited the surname "Kamishiro."

The most tragic part was that her pure Washuu bloodline, which led to her low status, caused her to be chosen as a "Childbearer," also known as a "Mother."

This means she was a "child-producing machine" solely responsible for reproduction; one can imagine how tragic that is without even saying it.

If it weren't for her childhood friend, Nimura Furuta, helping Kamishiro Rize escape from White Garden, Kamishiro Rize would certainly not have been able to break free from the Washuu Family's shackles.

Currently, Kamishiro Rize is, to put it plainly, still being pursued by the Washuu Family. Once caught, there's almost no chance of escaping again. Yet, she still casually preys on humans so openly.

...

The movie came to an end.

"It's finally over. It was indeed as good as others said."

Kamishiro Rize said with a hint of emotion.

Tear stains could be seen on her face, as if she had cried, moved by the movie.

Yakuchi Kei knew this was likely an act, so he didn't pay it any mind.

He expressed his opinion, "It was indeed very good, but a slight flaw was that the male protagonist was too indecisive and a bit weak."

"That's true, the male protagonist kept delaying until the very end before taking action. If he had just eloped with the female protagonist from the start, there wouldn't have been so many problems."

Kamishiro Rize also found some truth in that.

Since this movie was a "night showing," it was already past 9 PM, almost 10 PM, when they finished watching.

As they left the cinema and walked home, Yakuchi Kei and Kamishiro Rize were still talking about the movie they had just seen.

Just then, two girls in school uniforms walked past them, face to face.

It was Touka Kirishima and her classmate.

Seeing Kamishiro Rize and that human boy walking together so late, Touka Kirishima couldn't help but look back.

...

Touka Kirishima watched Yakuchi Kei's back, her brows slightly furrowed.

"Touka, what's wrong?"

Seeing Touka Kirishima suddenly stop, her classmate immediately asked.

"Nothing..."

Touka Kirishima withdrew her gaze and said indifferently.
