Synopsis
Ryuzen Akumoto is missing. His bedroom is undisturbed. The front door left ajar. And on the table, a letter—unsigned, untraceable, and addressed to his mother. Eiko Akumoto knows something is wrong. But as she searches for answers, she begins to encounter letters that feel far too personal—letters written by someone who seems to know her deepest regrets. The house feels emptier. The memories feel fractured. And the shell-shaped marking that appears again and again might mean more than she’s ready to admit. As reality slips further from her grasp, Eiko begins to wonder if the person she’s chasing… is chasing her in return. Dark, intimate, and psychologically unflinching, Never Me, Always You is a slow-burning mystery about guilt, memory, and the cost of rewriting your own story.

Chapter 1 - A Melody I Used to Know

A young girl drove back from her studio in her small car, painted a sunny yellow. She herself was dressed in colorful clothes, ones which always gave her all sorts of odd looks. With a worn hand she brushed her blunt bangs out of her warm eyes, her hands skimming over her twin buns restraining her thick, shining black hair. As she twisted her hand, her silver jewelry sparkled in the sunlight.

She was humming to herself, a tune which she couldn't place her finger on. She played the saxophone, as well as a variety of other instruments, afterall, she was an artsy person, working as an animator.

Her eyes flashed as she spotted a sedan screeching into the intersection, and her humming would abruptly stop as her hands seized and she pushed her foot down as hard as she could on the brakes— but it was all too late.

The car came barreling into hers, sending it skidding off of the road. There was a loud crash, and her body hung limp, broken. Her hands were mangled, and her neck angled in an odd direction.

The person inside the car that hit her stumbled out, clearly intoxicated. He was young, his face red from alcohol and his long gangly, boyish limbs moving awkwardly. He staggered over to her car, peeking inside the window only to see her corpse.

"Well, shit."
