Chapter 7 - Understanding the Elements

After Jack completed his training he decided to take a bath to clean himself.

Living in a new world without technology advancements, made it difficult to bathe. Jack didn't have water magic to fill a tub. Or fire magic to heat the water.

Any time he wanted to clean himself, he would have to find a couple of servants to help him.

On his way to ask some servants to help him, Jack ran into his sister Octavia. Octavia was a tall woman with milky white skin. She kept her silky white hair in a crown braid.

'Hello sister, I hope your day is going well.'

"Much better now little Jack." She clenched his arm and wrapped it around his left bicep. "I know Father wants you to run around and do a bunch of nice things, but we need to talk first."

'Can this wait? I really would like to bathe now.'

Octavia turned her head and nodded to her handmaid. "Belle will make sure you get a bath. But we need to go over affinities."

They made their way to Jack's room and Octavia took a seat on a fine red burgundy chair.

"How much do you know about the world and the elements?"

'I know there are four human nations, and a couple of other nations. But, I don't know too much about affinities.' Jack said as he put his hand to his chin.

"Eh, for someone who loves to read, I'm surprised you don't know this already. Father must have assumed you already knew this." Octavia said as she rubbed her forehead in distress.

Jack sat down on his bed in a cross-legged position as he stared at his big sister for the valuable lesson to come.

"There are four common elements. Earth, Fire, Water, and Wind magic. Then there are two advanced elements. Dark and Light magic. Then there is the strongest element, lightning."

'So I have the strongest affinity, that's awesome!'

"It's a blessing and a curse," Octavia said grimly. "Lightning is the most feared and respected element there is. If not for lightning users, Draconia would have been destroyed a long time ago."

"Lightning affinity is so rare because only a select few mages are ever born with the affinity that can fend off dragons," Octavia explained.

"Lightning magic is a dragon's weakness. When Draconia hears you've awakened as a lightning user with a high-grade magic talent, they'll either request your help or take you against your will for their war."

'Oh, that would be bad.'

"Yes, very bad little brother," Octavia said as she chuckled at Jack's response.

"Commoners and low-grade magic talents normally have fire or water magic affinity," Octavia explained. "Earth users are a little more rare simply because Orcs normally are born with at least an earth affinity."

"It makes them formidable. They already have enhanced strength and enhanced speed. And the ability to storm castles, take down bridges, and destroy cities at will makes them dangerous." Octavia said as she clenched her fist.

Jack noticed the quiet anger from his sister but he sat there patiently and waited for her to continue.

"Fire is the rarest element among the four basic ones. Because dragons and wyverns are mostly born with this affinity rather than humans. There are always exceptions to the rule, but for the most part it stands.

Water is the gift of life. Without it, we would die. So having someone who can control water magic is a must, especially if you're going down in a dungeon for a long time.

Wind magic is a universal element, elves and humans alike are most likely to have this element. The ability to run faster, to jump across lakes, and glide through the air. A universal, but very versatile element." Octavia paused to take a sip of tea that another handmaid had prepared during her lecture.

"Now light magic and dark magic are a lot rarer. Light magic is used to repel demons, heal wounds, and purify items. Dark magic relies on manipulating your enemies' deepest fears, curses, and necromancy."

"Lightning is the most feared because of the ability to be a dragon slayer. It has more versatile uses like teleporting over great distances and being the most destructive. " Octavia said with a bright smile.

"Some magic is from the creation of two or more elements. And other magic branches off from the standard 7 affinities like ice, necromancy, and lava magic." Octavia took another sip of her tea.

'I understand big sister.' Jack said with a big smile as he bowed his head.

"You're cute and all Jack, but you don't need to bow to everyone. You're the heir to the Kaiser family. You sit at the pinnacle of nobility with the exception of royalty." Octavia said with a slight grin.

"It looks like your bath is ready now, go enjoy yourself." Octavia started to walk to the door and stopped and turned her head with her hand on the door.

"Just promise me you'll be careful Jack. No one wants to lose you again."

'I promise big sis. I won't fall a second time."

Over the next week, Jack spent time with his mother, Lady Genevieve to learn how to make his own money.

Jack realized how awesome his mother was when it came to business.

The Kaiser family controls a large number of dungeons, mines, and ports in Elysium. Leading to a large gross of profits thanks to his mother.

Despite all the information Jack was surprised by the lack of items people had.

"Is everything okay master?" A servant asked.

'Yes Seraphina. Im just thinking about a way too make some good money.'

Seraphina was Jack's personal maid. She was blessed with water and fire magic at birth, but only having a D rank talents in both magic and martial arts left her with little options for work.

'Let's go to the storehouse. Mother gave me a key and told me to figure out what I wanted to try.'

After a short walk Jack arrived at the storehouse and looked through the materials there. With each passing item Jack passed, he used analyze to see each item in the storehouse.

After analyzing every item, Jack had leveled his Analyze to rank 3.

'Seraphina, tell me. If you were at home, or in a dungeon. How do you fight a fire for warmth?'

"You would need a fire mage master."

Thats when it hit him. Jack was going to create matches. It wasn't grand, it wasn't spectacular, but it was efficient.

When Jack was stuck in his dead end job as airport security, he spend his time reading and watching videos on how it's made.

He saw everything he needed to make them. Volcanic ash contained saltpeter and sulfur. Fire crystal dust was the same thing as red phosphorous. Tree sap was everywhere around them. Charcoal powder was discarded from workshops who had no use for them.

'Seraphina, I'm going to make something that will change life. Everyone will want it and it will be cheap to make. I need you to get a list to my mother of things I need. We'll start production in two days.'
