Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Sparks and Shadows

While Michael and Sarah's romance quietly bloomed, David and Mia were like a firecracker—loud, energetic, and unpredictable. Their connection had grown quickly, starting with random encounters on campus and turning into something electric. David, always the laid-back charmer, found Mia's wild, carefree energy impossible to resist. She was the type who could turn any dull moment into a party, and David? He was along for the ride, loving every second.

One sunny afternoon, Mia invited David to a rooftop café overlooking the campus. The golden hour bathed everything in soft shades of pink and orange as they sat across from each other, sipping iced teas. They traded stories about their lives, laughing between sips, but there was a subtle tension between them.

Mia tilted her head, with a playful smirk on her lips. "You never seem to take anything seriously, David. It's like you just coast through life."

David leaned back, grinning. "Who says I don't take things seriously? I mean, I am serious about basketball. And food. Does it not count?"

Mia rolled her eyes, but her smile gave her away. "You know what I mean! I am over here planning my whole future, and your attitudes are like, 'Eh, whatever happens, happens.' That drives me crazy, to be honest."

"Nah," David shrugged. "Life's too short to stress. You just must go with the flow. What is the point in worrying about stuff that has not even happened yet?"

"That would drive me insane," Mia shook her head. "But maybe that's why we get along. You keep me grounded, and I make sure you do not float away."

"Exactly," David winked, leaning closer. "We balance each other out."

But as perfect as their banter felt, something about Mia's teasing struck a chord with David. Was he too relaxed about this romantic relationship? Was she looking for something deeper that he had not considered yet? The thoughts haunted both for the rest of the evening.

On Friday, Mia planned a night out for the four of them—her, David, Michael, and Sarah. It was supposed to be a fun, carefree evening to blow off some steam after a hectic week. Sarah, always a bit reserved, hesitated when Michael suggested it.

"I am not much of a party person," Sarah said, biting her lip. "Are you sure it will not be too much?"

"Trust me," Michael grinned, nudging her. "It will be fun. Worst case, we leave early, and I owe you a quiet night at the library."

Sarah smiled, her resistance fading. "Okay, deal. But if it gets too wild…"

Michael laughed. "I will be your escape route, promise."

The bar buzzed with energy when they arrived—music pulsing, people laughing, drinks flowing. Mia, radiant in a red dress, waved them over. "Hey! Drinks are on me tonight. Let us make this night epic!"

David wrapped an arm around her waist, grinning. "Trying to get me tipsy?"

Mia winked. "Maybe I just want to see if your dance moves improve after a few drinks."

David laughed. "I would not count on it."

As the night wore on, David and Mia's chemistry was on full display. They danced, joked, and teased each other in a way that made their bond look effortless. Meanwhile, Michael and Sarah sat at the bar, sharing a quiet conversation over drinks.

"Are you okay?" Michael asked, glancing at Sarah with concern.

"I am fine," she smiled, her hand resting lightly on his. "Honestly, I am having more fun than I thought I would. Now I understand why people come to bars to relax."

"Glad to hear it. I do not want you to feel out of place."

"You make me feel happy, Michael," she said, leaning into him. "Being here with you makes everything better."

They smiled at each other, their connection grew stronger with each shared glance, each small touch. But as Michael turned back toward the dance floor, watching David twirl Mia around, something flickered in his mind. Could he and Sarah ever have that kind of playful energy? He was not sure.

Later, as the group stepped outside into the cool night air, the mood was light. Mia, still buzzing with energy, draped her arm around David while Michael and Sarah walked closely behind.

"Tonight was fun!" Mia declared, beaming. "We should do this more often."

David smirked. "You just enjoy making me dance."

"Maybe," Mia teased, poking his chest. "Or maybe I just like being around you."

David's grin faltered for a second, his thoughts were drifting. Was there something more Mia wanted from him? More than the casual fun they always had. He shook the thought away, wrapping his arm tighter around her.

Michael overheard their playful exchange and chuckled. "David on the dance floor is so funny that I am still trying to recover from it."

"Hey, at least he tries!" Sarah laughed, giving David a teasing look.

"Yeah, you guys stop making fun of me," David rolled his eyes, but smiled. "Compared with dancing, I am a bigger fan of basketball."

As they all walked back toward campus, the group fell into a comfortable rhythm—David and Mia still playfully teasing each other, Michael and Sarah exchanging soft smiles. But as the night wore on, David could not shake the feeling that something between him and Mia was changing. What if she wanted more than he could give? What if she was starting to outgrow their carefree, spontaneous relationship? He wondered.

For now, everything seemed perfect. But the thought lingered like a shadow in the back of his mind, hinting at changes to come.

Michael and Sarah's future felt steady, like a slow-burning flame. But David and Mia? Their spark burned bright, like fireworks. And in the back of his mind, David wondered if it would last or burn out too soon.
