Chapter 9 - CHAPTER 9 - THE SAFE HOUSE

London was supposed to be safety.

But Morgana had long since learned: nowhere is safe when the past comes calling.

---

After the Debrief

The debrief was brutal. Hours of pointed questions from senior analysts, the Director sitting silently at the head of the table, his eyes fixed on her as though he could will the truth out of her.

When it was over, Morgana wanted nothing more than a locked door between herself and the world.

Instead, she found herself in a car with Callen, headed for a temporary safe house.

---

The Ride

The city blurred by, lights streaking across wet glass.

"You okay?" Callen asked, after a long silence.

"Define okay," she said, staring out the window.

"You held your own in there. I could almost hear the knives hitting the table."

"I've been trained to survive a room full of knives," she said.

He glanced at her. "And before that? Who trained you?"

Her lips curved, but it wasn't a smile. "Life."

---

The Safe House

The safe house was a narrow townhouse in Marylebone. Clean. Silent. Too silent.

Morgana walked the perimeter out of habit, checking windows and doors, while Callen set up his laptop at the kitchen table.

"Locke doesn't trust you," Callen said casually, typing.

"I know," she replied.

"And you don't trust him," he added, looking up.

She met his eyes. "You notice everything, don't you?"

"Only when it comes to you."

For one moment, the words hung there, heavy as rain. Then—

---

The Ambush

The first bullet shattered the front window.

"Down!" Callen grabbed her and pulled her behind the table as a second shot exploded the lamp.

Three figures in tactical black stormed the entryway.

Morgana's pistol was in her hand before she'd even thought. She fired twice, forcing them back.

"Back exit!" Callen shouted.

They sprinted up the narrow staircase as glass and plaster exploded around them.

---

The Rooftop Escape

The back window led to a fire escape, slick from the rain. Morgana climbed first, heart hammering.

They reached the roof just as one of the attackers burst through behind them.

Callen turned, disarmed the man with a brutal efficiency, and knocked him out cold.

"You're welcome," he said breathlessly.

She didn't answer—she was already running across the rooftops, the London skyline spread like a jagged map beneath them.

---

The Hideout

Two streets over, they ducked into an abandoned building, pressed back against a wall.

Rainwater ran down Morgana's face, dripping from her lashes. She could hear Callen's breathing next to her, sharp and alive.

For a moment, they just stood there, close enough to feel each other's heartbeat, waiting for the world to calm down.

---

The Confession

"This isn't random," Callen said finally. "They were aiming for you."

She nodded.

"You think Locke set us up?"

"I think," she said slowly, "that Emil wants me to believe that."

"And what do you believe?"

She looked at him. "I don't know anymore."

---

Quiet Tension

The sound of sirens faded in the distance.

Callen reached up, brushed a strand of wet hair from her cheek.

She didn't move away. For a second—just a second—the space between them felt charged, inevitable.

Then she stepped back.

"We need to move," she said, voice steady again.
