Chapter 23 - Shadows And Steel

The dawn broke gray and cold over the Redwood Forest, where the fate of the Northern Lands was about to be decided.

The Council of War

In Dünrath's war chamber, Emil stood surrounded by his closest commanders.

Maps sprawled on the table, marked with enemy positions and supply routes.

Jorund pointed to the advancing lines of Baron Rask's forces.

"They'll push hard through the eastern pass. It's narrow, but it can hold a large force. If they break through, the heartlands are exposed."

Elna, seated beside Emil, added, "Our scouts report the enemy is overconfident. Their commanders underestimate the militias."

Emil nodded.

"Good. We'll use that."

The Battle Plan

Emil outlined a strategy of layered defense:

Forward skirmish teams would harass and slow the Baron's vanguard, using guerrilla tactics to frustrate and confuse.

Ambush points would be prepared along the eastern pass, with hidden musketeers ready to fire volleys into clustered enemies.

A reserve force would hold the mountain trails, ready to flank or reinforce as needed.

Supply lines would be cut by smaller Union Companies, straining the Baron's ability to resupply his troops.

The Web of Assassins

While plans for open battle took shape, another war was being waged in shadows.

A small group of Union agents, skilled in stealth and subterfuge, were dispatched to:

Infiltrate the royalist camps

Assassinate key officers and spies

Spread disinformation to sow distrust among the nobility

Emil had personally approved these missions, knowing that weakening the enemy's leadership could turn the tide.

Emil on the Frontlines

As the first shots echoed through the forest, Emil donned his practical travel cloak, red armband sewn tight.

He rode at the head of a column, his calm demeanor inspiring those around him.

Though he wielded no sword, his presence was a weapon — a symbol of the people's will.

The Battle Begins

Union musketeers emerged from the woods, firing disciplined volleys into the charging knights.

Baron Rask's cavalry faltered under the unexpected hail of lead.

Union skirmishers darted between trees, striking swiftly then vanishing.

The ambush at the pass caught the royalists in a deadly crossfire.

Chaos rippled through the baron's ranks.

A Turning Point

As night fell, the battle remained undecided.

Both sides suffered losses, but the Union's tactics had bought precious time and inflicted serious damage.

Emil convened his commanders.

"We hold, but we must be ready for their next move."
