Chapter 22 - The Jealous Young Master

There were three things every disciple of the Ninefold Sect learned early.

First: Never challenge an elder unless you want your cultivation crushed.

Second: Never trust the outer sect's kitchens during firewood shortages.

And third…

Never cross the Grand Scion of the Yueling Clan.

Especially if he believed you were stealing what was his.

Xian Lei felt the ripples long before the man appeared.

It was in the glances that shifted as he walked past.

The whispers that now followed him even among inner disciples.

The way conversations paused… when he entered a courtyard.

The tether hummed quietly, not in danger—but with tension.

Yueling Jin had returned.

And he was watching.

The young master's arrival was nothing short of ceremonial.

He descended upon the Ninefold Sect astride a flying crane beast clad in silver-plated armor, banners of his clan trailing behind him like clouds of prestige.

Handsome, refined, and vicious in his pride, Yueling Jin had always worn arrogance like a tailored robe. His every gesture dripped with entitlement.

And to the world, Yue Qianlan was his betrothed.

A union arranged between the sect and the Yueling Clan to "secure balance."

To her?

It was a leash.

To him?

A crown.

And now, someone else was standing too close.

Xian Lei met Yueling Jin for the first time in this life in the White Lotus Courtyard, a public forum where inner disciples meditated, exchanged techniques, and boasted with tact.

He was reviewing a frost-script technique scroll when shadows lengthened behind him.

"Strange," a smooth, mocking voice said, "I don't recall inviting ants to sit in this garden."

Xian Lei didn't look up.

"If this is your garden," he replied, "the weeds have overgrown it."

Gasps. Then silence.

Yueling Jin stepped forward, robes immaculate, hands clasped behind his back. His golden hair caught the sunlight; his jade pendant glowed with sect authority.

His smile was practiced.

His eyes? Cold.

"You're Xian Lei."

Xian Lei finally looked up. "And you're late."

"…Excuse me?"

"You're engaged to someone you barely visit. You must be either very trusting—or very foolish."

The surrounding disciples flinched.

But Jin… laughed.

A soft, cultured sound.

"I see. Yue's found herself a little guard dog."

"She's not yours to 'find.'"

"Perhaps. But she's mine by contract."

Xian Lei stood.

He didn't release killing intent. Didn't draw his spiritual power.

He simply stared.

And Jin's smile faltered.

"You think her attention matters?" Jin said, smile returning.

"I know it does."

"She's beyond you. Beyond all of us."

"Then you should fear what's below you."

"You speak boldly for a pseudo-disciple."

"I act bolder."

A dangerous silence followed.

Then Jin flicked his sleeve, scattering silver qi sparks into the air.

"Very well. Let's see if your bite matches your bark. Spar me at dawn, Third Azure Arena."

"Inner Sect duels require elder sanction," Xian Lei reminded.

"Already granted."

Of course it was.

Jin's clan could buy sanction like incense sticks.

That night, as Xian Lei walked through the frost fields, a familiar voice echoed from a nearby balcony.

"You antagonized him deliberately."

He didn't flinch.

Yue Qianlan stood above, pale hair drifting on the wind, robes soft as moonlight.

"I didn't antagonize him," Xian Lei said. "I introduced myself."

"He's not as harmless as you think."

"And I'm not as naive as you remember."

A pause.

Her gaze darkened.

"Do you know what he'll do if he feels truly challenged?"

"Destroy me politically. Sabotage my resources. Ruin my name?"

She nodded.

"I'm counting on it," Xian Lei replied.

"Why?" Yue finally asked.

"Because he's in the way," Xian Lei said simply. "Not just of me. Of you."

She said nothing.

But for a moment…

The ice cracked in her aura.

The Next Morning – Third Azure Arena

Hundreds gathered, though no duel had been formally announced.

Word had spread.

Yueling Jin versus the rising frostfire anomaly—Xian Lei.

Jin appeared in immaculate battle robes, bearing a dual-blade technique favored by the Yueling patriarch.

Xian Lei wore his plain inner disciple robes.

No banners.

No crowd.

No favors.

Just clarity.

And resolve.

Elder Mo presided.

"First to yield or fall. Spiritual weapons permitted. Fatal strikes discouraged but allowed by mutual consent."

"I permit," Jin said coldly.

"I decline," Xian Lei replied.

Gasps.

"Cowardice?" Jin asked.

"Clarity," Xian Lei said. "I don't need to kill you. Just make you bleed."

The duel began.

Jin was fast.

Arcs of silver lightning danced from his twin blades, cracking the earth with each sweep. His Ice-Lightning root gave him blinding bursts of speed and devastating piercing power.

But Xian Lei moved like mist.

Frostfire mist.

Each of Jin's strikes hit empty air, shattered illusions, or rebounded off thin layers of spiritual flame-forged frost.

Then—

Xian Lei's real palm slammed into Jin's chest.

"Soulfreeze Seal."

A burst of pain—not fatal, but humbling.

Jin reeled.

His qi wavered.

His stance—broken.

The crowd gasped.

"Concede," Xian Lei said, voice level.

Jin's pride flared.

He lunged again—

And Xian Lei stepped forward—

Not with a technique.

Not with power.

But with presence.

The arena dropped in temperature.

Even the watching elders frowned.

Because Yue Qianlan's aura had just flared…

From him.

Just a trace.

A moment of reflection.

But enough.

Jin froze.

And dropped his blades.

"Winner: Xian Lei," the elder declared.

No one cheered.

They simply watched him.

As if unsure what he was anymore.

After the match, Yue found him alone.

She didn't ask how.

Didn't ask why.

Just said: "You've just made an enemy."

"I made a choice," he corrected.

Her eyes searched his.

"What are you really planning, Xian Lei?"

He smiled slightly.

"A future where neither of us wears chains."

She didn't smile back.

But she didn't walk away either.

And in her silence—

Something far more powerful stirred.
