Chapter 1 - NOTE:

My esteemed brother Alfred has enlightened me upon the prospect of his literary endeavour concerning my most recent case to date. He has also requested a confidential missive on my behalf, and thus you find yourself perusing these words at this present juncture.

He has often declared, and is most likely to reiterate within this narrative, that he regards me as one of the most humble and kind-hearted ladies he has ever encountered. However, it is apparent that his perception of the world is regrettably narrow, for I do believe there exist many women of equal attentiveness to mine own. I harbour no resentment towards him, for he spends the greater part of his hours within the confines of our home whilst I regale him with vivid tales of my daily encounters. Thus serving as one of the primary catalysts for his sudden yearning to embark upon this literary journey.

At first blush, I considered the notion absurd, fearing that I might inadvertently divulge my secrets. Yet, as this idea lingered in the recesses of my mind, an alternate thought emerged. There exists a prospect that numerous women may find interest in my endeavours, seemingly captivated by each successive revelation. Therefore, I am compelled to proffer a few words of encouragement to all young ladies and women, regardless of their heritage or circumstances.

You, my dearest, are indeed formidable. Possessing attributes and qualities that men often dream of, your nature may render you the antagonist in another's tale. Nevertheless, allow me to remind you that you are cherished despite such perceived imperfections. We are all flawed, thus I implore you to cherish your individuality. You possess the potential to become whomever you aspire to, and the capacity to render your narrative worthy of being told. Take heed of the wisdom of my elder sister Elizabeth; she shall affirm this truth.

Now, to my gentlemen compatriots who are present, I bid you welcome and express my delight in your pursuit of my brother's work. Permit me to withhold a fragment for your consideration, and I advise you to heed my words attentively or make your departure forthwith.

I fervently advise you to remain ever vigilant. Maintain an acute awareness of your surroundings, and permit not any circumstance to bestow dominion over yourself, regardless of its apparent difficulties. I pose this query for the most straightforward reason. One may gaze upon the lady in one's existence, yet remain blissfully unaware of the broader tableau. Forsooth, she could be artfully orchestrating a scheme to manipulate your masculine strengths to her own advantage, thereby extracting the unvarnished truth from your very essence. This, indeed, is what Alfred terms The Art of Deception.

Take utmost care.

With regards,

Miss Mara Coleman
